Would not bother to be honest, they tend to rust around the lock.

But I would be fitting it and would seal up the bare metal after enlargement.

Geoff, assuming that you correctly reseal the paintwork once you have enlarged the boot look hole to accommodate it you should be OK. These were initially dealer fit, so relied on the BMW tech doing the job properly - which a lot didn't seem to bother with. There are quite a few with these badly fitted hence the rust issue.

Haven't seen on up for sale for some time, so I'd try BMW first to see if they are still available. Failing that you might need to find a bootlid from a zed which has been broken which has one fitted? Not sure if @spurs fan in a coupe has one...

These are the part numbers.

The first seems to cover both parts.

Opening bracket - 82149404646

Exterior trunk lid lock adapter - 51242491030
Trunk lid lock gasket - 51242491517

Agree with HT - they are a rust trap, but you shouldn't have to lift the boot lid. The gas struts should lift it part way for you once you release catch

When I press the button my boot rises a few inches on it's own

I was going to do the same to mine and enquired on here, general consensus was to leave well alone, so I did.

At last the lifter is fitted, bare metal painted, rubber grommet fitted when paint dry.
Before we started we read the official write up on what size the hole needed to be enlarged to ie: 38 to 40mm, we did not think that that was large enough so we made a template in cardboard, made sure that the grommet fitted ok, now ready to mark up and enlarge hole to 46mm, dont know where the 38/40 was arrived at/
It makes lifting the boot so much better and now that I have replaced one of the gas struts that was broken, the boot now stays up

Did you take any pics while doing the job Geoff? Would make a good write up for anyone wishing to do it in the future.
