BMW Z3 Speedster

Even if it was cheap I don’t think many people would bother. For me, the humps behind the seats are not pronounced enough and because their length is constrained by the boot, they’re too short. I think the Jaguar Project 7 looks quite good with its D-type hump and the Z07 Speedster concept was interesting, but the speedster kit on the Z3 just seems to be trying too hard. The sat nav reception must be brilliant on that Z8! 🤣

Strange comment to say the least on a Z forum.
And a no from me ……..why would you buy a Z then try to make it look like something else? It’s always going to be a poor imitation of whatever it’s imitating, why not just purchase something you like that you can actually afford.

There are those who just want to drive something that looks like something they can't afford.

But there's others who like tinkering.

I've owned my z3 for close to 20 years. I really wanted to build a kit. It's been on my bucket list for years. Not so I can drive it. Driving isn't that important to me. But the enjoyment and satisfaction I get working on something. Keep me busy in my retirement etc.

I don't have the space to keep the z3 and built a kit. So the z has to go. Now what chassis should I use for my kit?

Vw Beetle and build a Ferrari Dino!

Lots of cars had filler caps at the rear in the past, MGB and Scimitar come readily to mind. Don't know how we survived! :)

Now that's what I call a scary-looking place for a fuel tank. Bit of an old design/layout there, stick it wherever it fits and sod the safety aspect. Unless a petrol tank was considered a crumple zone back then.

507 Series 1 had the fuel tank behind the seats. Series 2 they moved it back beside the spare wheel as in that picture. Remember this is the 50's when safety was way down on the list.

It seems that the first few 507 (series 1) that were sold in the USA didn't have enough leg room for tall americans. So for the series 2 the fuel tank, that was behind the seats, was moved back to allow the seats to be moved back further.

At least on a Sprite or MGB the tank was under the floor, outside the car. The tank location of the Pinto and its habit of splitting in a crash cost Ford a fortune after a class action in the USA. In the UK people never thought about the vulnerable tank in a corner of the boot an old Mini, with openings on each side of the back seat.

Matra Bagheera. Engine bay behind the seats with plastic fuel tank in front of the engine mounted verrically on the bulk head in front of fhe engine behind the seats.

Me driving up the autobahn and I see in the rear view mirror the engine bay is full of smoke.

Pulled over and opened the back lid and saw that the wire that connects to the gear linkage for the reversing light switch was melting its way through the top of the fuel tank. The spade connector had come away from the reversing light switch and was shorting on the engine block. Very strange that no fuse blew. Just melted a groove all the way across the top of the fuel tank.
