Having ordered a new replacement from a BMW Dealer my friend collected this item. once i had seen the part i knew it was wrong. I spoke to the parts department and according to them it's the correct part for my VIN number.

They asked for the part number from the old unit after its removal the part number is 13541435625. Looking on ebay

But this item isn't meant for the Z3.

so my question is how can this be.

What Item number did you order? the first boot looks like the right one to me.
 
First boot is what I ordered for my '97 2.8. Ordered from BMW and they did say they had a guess which one I needed.

I took the car to the BMW dealer lifted the bonnet to show the guy the part, he ordered part number 13541705209 which is the first photo BUT mine is the second photo part number 13541435625.
My car is. BMW Z3 2.2i MY SPORT 2002
 
Just for info I have a spare boot fresh from BMW. Its the one from the first photo. If anyone needs it let me know.
