If you want a good job done you won't get much change out of £3k for a full respray. Factor in new cill covers at circa £300 from BMW (both, and not sprayed)

Agreed. Any less than £2k (plus parts) and you're getting a low quality job.
Make sure whoever paints it oven cures the paint. You'll pay more for bodyshops that use ovens but the finish will far outlast those that air cure their paint. Air cured paint will stone chip and look awful within weeks.

I paid £2400 12 months ago, stripped down and rebuilt myself also. Everything was done excluding the windscreen surround. Plus the backs of the sills and wings were treated and stone chipped. The guy I used works alone, not a bodyshop. He did say that was too cheap once he had done it due to the work he put in and wouldn't do another at that price.

Out of interest, is there anyone out there specialising in repainting and generally restoring/refurbishing Z's? I'm not thinking mechanical or general servicing, more body, paint and trim defects/ faults?
@Sean d is your man mate.

I'm not sure there's such a thing as a 'quick blow over' unless you are patching a car quickly and cheaply to sell. Then it's up to the seller whether it's a fair thing to do to the new owner. I associate a blow over with tarting a car up only for it to rust again in 2-3 weeks...

You are really asking about a full respray and they are £2-£3k.

There is a place in Swansea which I intend to use when I have an odd part that needs painting. I've not had anything I need doing yet. I've been to chat with him before and I asked to see his completed work. It looked good. And I'm hugely fussy. He explained he is a former BMW man. That was 2-3 years ago and he is an older chap so can't guarantee he hasn't retired. Although if he has he had a son working with him who may be continuing it. I haven't been back down there since.

He has premises that look like something out of the 1970s from the outside but don't let that put you off. The great Jack Smiths in Swansea is the same. His prices were about 50% of more mainstream body shops. He could be just what you are looking for. He is out the back of Pic-Up spares yard (not the retail counter side of the road) down by the Morfa off Cwm Level Road.

No. And I’d need to check they are still there. I’m driving past in a few minutes and can check.

........ It means I've forgotten to either check or post a message in the time it takes me to get from the Wetherspoons to B&Q. Quite plausible. =))
Forgotten - yeah. It's a sign of old age. I've already forgotten what this thread was about.

Oh. Yeah. ReSpray in South Wales. "Colb" is in Newport. If you're over to the east of south wales then I'd be asking Colb. Surely he knows somebody round there.

I'm too tight to pay a bodyshop that kind of money, so I bought myself a compressor and taught myself to paint.
Painted my Z3 last year, materials cost me about £100.
If you have a decent size garage to work in and you take your time with preparation and hygiene, you can get great results.
My Z3 turned out so well I repainted the bonnet and sills on my Jaguar XF, looks perfect!!
You can learn how to do anything if you do your research on Youtube and do some practice.
Just one word of advice if you fancy the challenge, you will need to send about £400 on a decent spray gun for the clear coat.
You can lay down the primer and base coat with a cheap gun, but you need a good one for the clear coat if you want professional looking results.
There's nothing more satisfying than painting a car when it turns out well, I highly recommend taking the time to learn if you can.

You will have to pay a lot of money to get a good job. Water-based paint looks like Hammerite unless it is flattened between sprays. Just look at @Nodzed 's latest post after a polish. It's very shiny, but the reflections show how poor the paint finish is on modern cars. The lacquer may be flat, but if the paint isn't, it looks awful. Just go into any showroom and look at the roofs of the cars.

Just to add the black Z4 wasn't the respray I had done.
