I was offered, and went on the same course Peter. The guys who ran the course we're nice people who have themselves been in the very same position. It's just a fact of life. As we left at about 9.00pm we were all asked to be very careful not to get caught on the way home! It does happen. I try to use my CC in speed limited stretches but the biggest problem is by far people not going fast enough, they're scared to drive up to the limit in case their speedo is out, very frustrating. As I left Lincoln one night last week I almost stumbled accross a Police speed and road tax detection van which is regularly parked just at the edge of a 30mph into a 40mph zone. They even put a sign at the roadside to warn you that they are there, but I almost approached at 35 but just got it down in time. I hope.

Something to do with going to court, if you are found guilty it goes on your criminal record, I too do not understand it fully but as I said I had no reason not to believe what I was being told.
 
a criminal record could have an effect on future job opportunities, some company's run checks.
 
I'd feel pretty hard done by if I lost a job opportunity because I had a speeding conviction. A few mph over the speed limit isn't normally looked as a criminal act, it's more of a misdemeanour. If you were caught at twice the speed limit, then that's another matter. Convictions for speeding or parking offences are not usually high on the list of excluders.

I would have thought that if a person was a serious candidate for a job then they would be given the opportunity to explain their case.

Most filtering is done by job agencies for big companies. You're likely to not even get consideration never mind an interview in most circumstances.
 
The point of the point Speed awareness course is to give you a chance to learn from your mistake, and although you pay the "fine" albeit ( £90 and not £100 ) to cover the cost of the course you don't have to appear in court, you don't get points on your license and you're not obliged to disclose that you have attended such a course to anyone. My speed was 82mph in a 70mph (dual carriageway) zone which equates to 70 mph + 10% = 77 (to allow for speedo inaccuracies) + a maximum 6mph giving 83mph. I was only just inside this figure so was offered the speed awareness course by virtue of 1mph !!

So if my paper say driving 70 in 60 zone same equation would apply? 60+10% + 6 is 72. My paper say 70.
 
If you have been clocked at 70mph then your speedometer must of been reading around 74mph as i have found that the speedometers are around 4% out on the slower side. I always use my satnav speed as that is the most accurate. If you had been doing 66mph you would of got away with it and your speedometer would of been reading around 68 to 72mph.

The last time I was in a car that was caught for speeding, I wasn't driving. A certain Welsh member of the forum was at the wheel. I had been dozing off a bit as I had driven a few hundred miles that day already. The rumble strip on the side of the road passed under the car and the noise of it woke me. I looked at the Welshman next to me but he just pointed his finger behind him. I looked to the back of the car in time to see the police pull in behind us on the side of the road. After examining our credentials, they took the Welshman (no handcuffs) and locked him in the back of their car and took him directly to traffic court. The police told me I couldn't drive over the medial strip on the interstate but had to make a u-turn at the next exit which was in the next state several miles away. I caught up with the Welshman in a small town outside of the traffic court. He had to pay a hefty fine before he was released. I think I'm the only one who knows what that fine was as he has never revealed it to the forum, but I think you guys were let off easy by comparison. But then again, he was clocked at 107 in a 70. It was fun while it lasted. Frankie

So, if you had been clocked at 73 (outside of the limits) you wouldn't have been offered the speed awareness course. It's the best of a bad job Peter, no points on your license and a slight reduction in the fine.

Well, i haven't been offered yet, i've got first paper from them, so have to return it admitting offense. I understand only after they will offer or not offer courses?

Maybe works differently then where you were caught speeding mate, I think I was offered it straight off, I'll check though.

I did a speed awareness course about 6yrs ago. I was clocked doing 60mph in a 60mph limit but was driving a "non car derived" van which had a limit of 50mph (Ford Connect)

I found the course very informative but we did have a couple of very good instructors who were great at inviting participation from the delegates.

A few of my mates have done the course and were less than impressed. Probably says more about them though than the course.
 
Absolutely agree there Garry, if you go on the course with an open mind you can learn a lot. Our instructors, one of whom arrived on his large motor bike, were very good at getting reaction from us too. The man sitting next to me was also a van driver. As regards the course I actually enjoyed the experience and I think becoming an instructor is something I could do.

The problem is that most drivers think their driving is excellent and they've got nothing to learn. None of us are perfect. Most of us get into bad habits without realising it. We all make mistakes.
Am sure you would get higher engagement if the presenters were allowed to feedback how receptive attendees were with the option of getting points for anyone not listening and engaging. That would stop those using the course to just get out of points as they're the ones who need to listen most.
There should be courses for other transgressions and they should use shock tactics if necessary to show the consequences maybe as an option for those who don't want to listen.

Bill ,this is because your speedo can't catch up with you! ...with you and Mozza!...:D
if you slow down a little bit the navi and the speedo will become good friends!=))
