just got FPN letter for £100 and 3 point for driving 70 on m5 j15-16 while overhead 60 illuminated.

i have clean license, but there no options for speed awareness course in the letter.

shame to get 3 points for such a minor offence. I can't really remember how this had happened, traffic was calm and i drove in middle line among other motorists. It was a sunday after all!

ok, f..k a 100 quid, but 3 bloody points will cost me a fortune for insurance next year.

is it makes sense to go to court instead or better to take as is?

It's not the overhead ones you should worry about, it's the new hi speed ones at the side on the gantry support. Not good that you got a ticket though. Another way of raising the revenue after giving so much away to the lower emission cars.

Thanks for your information as I'll be heading that way on Sunday

If it said 60 and you were doing 70 then you are banged to rights, if you were doing 66 then you'd have been on the limit of the 10% speedo accuracy allowance under construction and use regs. Sucks and is petty I know but that's how they make their money. I was on the M25 once doing about 60 and just as I was about to go under an overhead gantry it flashed up 50 limit - no way I could suddenly come down to that but thankfully sense prevailed. On A and B roads they like to hide on down hill stretches on a bend where they know even the most careful drivers are subject to their speed running away - easy money, it's all about getting the revenue in.

That's how I got collared in the summer coming home from the "Just Jane" meet Adrian, on Lincoln's by-pass only about 12 mils from home.:(

Tony.

Just ordered an anticam radar. Will see if any good! I am paying enough taxes and generally i am careful driver, i don't want to pay more to those bastards!

Well, if they caught me doing 100 in 70 zone i wouldn't complain, but put 60 on totally free motorway at sunday - fick em!

Used to laugh like hell in the UK with Dutch plates....every camera went off on the M25 and my Dutch mate was chasing behind me.
Neither of us got a fine.....:D

I am on EU license, but on UK plates. Good thing that if i ever collect 12 points my license will be invalidated in uk only ;)

What is utmost ridiculous is a fact that many ppl from continent drive on continental plates and don't give a s***. Don't pay uk insurance, don't pay uk roadtax and there is no ficking way to prosecute them. In theory uk residents not allowed to drive non-uk cars in uk on permanent basis, but there is no way to enforce this law. You may noticed a cars on polish, romanian, lithuanian regs... But me being a law-obeying person get ficked for being law-obeying! I should have registered my car in Latvia and don't give a s***! Insurance would be 10x cheaper too!

But surely you only have a certain amount of time driving on a European licence if you live in the UK

Same over here but I was advised to swap my British licence for a Dutch one.

FFS...Gaz put me on night shift.
I actually misinformed you. 6mth is for plate, not for license. EU\EEK driving licenses are 100% equivalent to UK and does not have to be replaced no matter how long one live in UK. Another story to cars, must be registered in UK after 6 months, but no enforcement ;)

I was told those overheads are active at 70 even when no limit is shown. Simply no point in going over the limit on the ever increasing amounts of managed motorways, especially as there's more of the new cameras appearing.
Where there are overhead limits the first camera in that limit generally is not active until you've passed a couple of lit signs or for a delay after the change. If there's a change in limit shown I guess the previous higher one is the one that would be used.

its abit crap, so look at it this way, at 70 my speedo reads about 76, so if the cam has got you doing 70 then your speedo must have been nearly 80 (in a 60), i know this wont help any, we all do it without even realizing we are, i too have a clean licence and i would be hopping mad in your shoes too.

The new high speed ones are on the new ganterys on the M1 where its been widened j29-35 they inforce the limit at 70 they nade so much money when the 50 limit was in whilst widening the cameras are always on now.
Spoke to one of the contractor's installing them and he advised they would have you at very little over the limit.

I suppose we are now getting to a time where it is feasible/cost effective to monitor roads electronically for speed limits, a cash cow really but when all is said and done they only catch people who are over the limit... don't get me wrong it frustrates the hell out of me as I have recently been subject to a FPN myself but it was my car, with me in it and it was going faster than the applied limit on that stretch of road!

is it makes sense to go to court instead or better to take as is?

I spoke with an officer whilst viewing the footage of the alleged fine and he offered some advise, If I wanted to challenge the FPN I had to decline the standard offer of a fine and points, at this point I may be given a second chance offer, should I refuse this offer and go to court and be found guilty of the speeding offence is then classed as a criminal charge which sits on my record! I had no reason to believe the individual was scaremongering about the criminal record but it does put things in to perspective. 3 points and a fine is relative short term pain in comparison to a criminal record.

I really can't understand why a speeding offence can but turned into a criminal record. That just doesn't seem right Brian but I do believe you.

my speedo is precise, at 70 it is 70. I do speeding time to time as any driver, but in this case i simply not realised 60 was turned on. Sunday, calm traffic, no accidents, good weather. Why the heck 60? To make more money of us, no other reason.
