Hmmmm. I suspect he's been required to take one for the team and walk the plank. I suspect though that VW will take care of him. Wrong person all together not nearly high enough up the food chain for me.

My goodness :p
All that money to pay back ;)

Is it fair to lock up someone who was working on behalf of a giant corporation. Plus is it even a criminal offence.

Not sure this is a good move as it might stop other people coming forward

I would think that this type of punishment will in fact make more people report events, they can see how serious not reporting can be.

I'm sure he was given a brief as what was needed to be achieved.

The persons above giving the brief need to be weeded out.

And the UK government need to get prosecuting also.

The whole thing makes me sick, putting profits before environment and peoples well being.

Why do you eat chains?

He won't be just an engineer. He'll be a senior engineer that commissioned the development. Won't be just a grunt who just thought it would be a wizard wheeze to try and put something in the code that he thought would be a good idea.
It's something that would have been sanctioned at a high level and will be documented somewhere in their own design and test specs. It will also be embedded in their code version control system because that bit of code will be in many versions of ECU software.

There will be an evidence trail. If I worked at VW I'd be keeping my own copies of the software, design specs and test specs....They will all have approvals signed at stage gates before the software gets anywhere near release and production. This 'fix' is installed worldwide - not just in US vehicles.
If I were technical director I'd be seriously worried.
There's no way they can keep this at low levels in the organisation even if they have folk willing to fall on their swords. Removing all evidence will be an almost impossible task - any forensic software inspection will quickly show who's been involved and there will be breadcrumbs that point to where its been used. It will all lead back to Germany.

Pretty clever s*** though.....
Not that clever - they got caught
You want clever - I'll show you how digital tv channels are encoded and multiplexed in real time. That really is clever s***!
We simultaneously do over 1,000 tv channels on terrestrial and satellite!
The fact that you might think few of them are worth watching is a completely different story. ;)

Totally agree @Redline and if the people on top claim no knowledge they wouldn't be where there are in the first place. They'll try throwing $$$ and scapegoats out by the hundreds in an attempt to. cover their butt holes but eventually they'll pay the price! JMO. JIM
