Ok, I give in, any idea if my battery is an agm or not? Tried googling the numbers on it to no avail .
Picture as below.
Thanks in advance.

agm ?

Tony.

Absorbent glass mat. AGM.
BMW seem to typically use these and there's a setting on my ctek charger for agm.
I'm trying to identify if the current battery is AGM or not.

No it's not an AGM

AGM and EFB batteries designed for stop start vehicles always say on them .

While we are on this subject if you do have an agm efb type battery in your vehicle it needs to be replaced by the same type .
A standard battery is designed to have about 20-30 k cycles an Agm battery is designed to have around 80 -120k cycles so if you replace an agm with a standard battery the start stop system will kill it in no time at all .

Bet theirs a price difference!

You learn something new every day!

Yes Paul a lot of the larger capacity Agm are over £200 a standard battery same size would be half the price Efb are a bit cheaper than Agm but still a chunk dearer than a standard
But these special type battery are designed to deal with the strain put on by modern technology
Remember that if you have a stop start system when the car cuts out at lights the headlight infotainment system heater sat nav etc all stays on then the car has to start to pull away all this a standard battery just can't cope with does it in no time at all .

When the battery goes on the GT think it would be cheaper and better to just have the stop start removed!

Daughter just had to get a new battery on their Mini which has start/stop tech. £150.

Tony.

AGM surely not fitted to Z3 ?

Tony.

On my old mx5 1992 it was fitted with glass mat battery due to it being enclosed in the boot. Apparently they don't leak if tipped up. When I replaced it I got a standard battery.
https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/battery-westco-mk1-25-p-635.html as I recall it was to prevent fumes escaping it to the boot if the battery broke or tipped over.

Also known as "Gell" batteries. Is why I was confused re the OP asking about AGM .

Tony.

Yes, I think i they were supposed to be compulsory on mx5s. Most fitted standard batteries when it came to replacement as they were cheaper.

It's confusing but there are differences between agm and gel, see below from a battery supplier website. Plus it means that they can charge you more for a new one.
What are the differences between AGM and gel batteries?
VRLA batteries come in two distinct versions: AGM batteries and gel batteries. In the gel battery certain elements - often specific mixtures of silicon - are added to the battery acid, transforming the electrolyte into a gel-like substance that cannot leak. By “drilling” channels in the gel, gaseous oxygen moves from the positive plate to the negative plate. Here it encounters hydrogen gas and recombines into water, releasing energy. Gel batteries have excellent capacity, but their slightly increased acid resistance makes them less suitable for use as starter batteries. They are highly resistant against excessively deep discharge, retaining function even when the battery is discharged to 20% of its nominal capacity.

In AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries the electrolyte is held in place by a separating membrane. This is why these batteries are also known as membrane batteries. The membrane consists of a fiberglass mat and functions as a sponge. This function is based on the capillary properties of the membrane. AGM batteries can be produced using very thin separating membranes, leading to low internal resistance. This means that high output power can be achieved with batteries of relatively low size, making this type of battery ideal for a wide variety of applications

Just isolate it Paul. Every time I fire up the Yeti the first thing I do is isolate the stop/start.

That's what I would likely do Andy.

That's OK if i had any type of short term memory, i'm getting on a bit now
