Afternoon all,

Being a student I have no tools at all, so I can't do any of my own work on the car. I want this to change, as I'm on an automotive course at uni and is a bit embarrassing that I don't do my own repairs.
So my question.

Is there a tool set, or a good list of tools which will allow me to do a lot/the majority of jobs on the Z3 for myself? I use the word do, I mean attempt...

FWIW I've had a set of Metrinch spanners for many years, quite pricey but never slip, not broken one either, and that was using them every day as a mechanic. The sockets are just as good. Cheap tools aren't worth buying by the time you've replaced them a couple of times and lost a few lumps out of your knuckles (how did I learn this?).

That's such a tough question for a lot of us. The reason is that now, when we buy a tool, it's most probably a specialty tool as most of the tools we have, we have had for years (and years, and years and...........) It's been such a long time since we've had to buy the BASIC things. My advice, since you need complete sets of wrenches, sockets, etc. would be to buy a complete large set at the best price you can find. Look for a sale. Ask @t-tony what brands are good over there. Ones that will hold up or have life-time guarantees. I think he'll be able to give you some good advice.. Frankie
 
I agree with the suggested set that Frankie mentions. It's a lot cheaper to buy many pieces of good quality that way over buying piece by piece. Buy what you can afford and save up if you have to!! JIM
 
Best advice Connor, just buy the best that you can afford, they will pay you back in time. I've worked with that advice which was given to me about 43 years ago;). I would still have had a lot of my original tools if some thieving scum from Gainsborough had not helped themselves to them in 1992.:(

I have to echo the same just buy quality rather than quantity. A good quality half inch drive socket set is a good place to start i suppose but it depends on application.
Cheap tools will either cause problems to bolts and nuts as they will tend to slip as the metal gives and its never frendly on the knuckles!! .
Quality will last you alife time and you can add the bits as you go to aquire a comprehensive set of quality tools over time.
 
Most cars are more friendly to a 3/8" drive socket set, you will need some 1/2" gear if you intend doing much suspension work, so I would look for a set which combines the 2 sizes. Also years ago Snap=On were one of the first to offer lifetime warranty on tools, now Mac Tools, Britool, Facom and most others do. Halfords own range are good I would look there, also these have a lifetime warranty.

Thanks for all the advice, will have a trip to halfords Saturday whilst the GF works :D:D.

On that note, does anyone know if halfords make number plates instore? Taffzee misplaced the front plate whilst he's had his private plate.:whistle:

I can't say for definite Connor, but if they do they will likely need proof of identity, driving license and of your address ie utility bill or other to supply one.

Yeah they do mate. You need proof of insurance and V5.

I just refreshed all my tools with the Halfords advanced. Great tools and lifetime guarantee. Big set from them, spanners up to 32mm, big hammer, Female torx set and your set for any job on the z3.

Do you know whether you have order the plates online first? or do you think I can just go down and they'll do them as I wait?

Or if you like fancy number plates I can give you a contact who makes Gel plates. they are legal and look really cool. I have them on mine. £45 for a pair.

they look good, but just need to get the car through the MOT at the minute.

Then i'll be getting some other stuff including clear lenses and now possibly those plates.

In fact, I might start a project thread....

Just had an email from Halfords looks as if they are having a half price sale on socket sets.

Some car bolts seem to have some sizes not stocked in standard sets ie 16 and 14 mm sockets so worth checking.
