Wonder if the batteries were the fire igniter?

He can't have many lives left Paul. Remember the big one at Spa where he nearly took Alonso's head off?

We just watched it frame by frame. From outside the car, it looked like something must have broken - why else would he suddenly spike right, but from his onboard, it looks like it was 100% his own fault. He kept turning right and either didn't see (or thought he was in front of) Kvyat.

He's lucky that everything worked, and that the safety protocols that have been put in place since Watkins Glen in '73 worked, or he'd have ended up like Cevert.

He was one very lucky person to walk away from that!

Bad that the Armco barrier seems to have just squeezed apart cutting the car in half. Amazing how strong the safety cell is , no broken bones at all.

The Sky SLO mo video shows him start to turn left just before he hit Kvyats front wheel, so he must have thought he had passed him. But then Brundle said he saw Grosjean had both his race boots on! Look again Martin.

I think you're referring to the 74 race at the Glen where Helmuth Koinigg went through the barrier and was decapitated. Cevert ended up on top of the barrier at the esses in 73 and in one piece. Ron Howard got that a bit wrong in the movie. #iamaf1nerd......

Weird how Grosjean's car broke in two, when Koinigg crashed most of the car went straight through the barrier whereas the Haas rear end stayed track side, but the front end with seat/safety cell went straight through. The halo clearly saved his life.

They're saying that it was the inertia of the sudden stop which when the car tried to swing round the thing just snapped in two.

53 g apparently
53g is pretty huge. Sainz's crash at Sochi in 2015 was 46g. Kubica hit a whopping 75g at the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix. Not just the halo that saved Romain Grosjean - the HANS collar would have had a massive factor to save his head and neck from catastrophic injury - something Kubica didn't have. Just two of the safety related developments of recent years.
