Thanks very much for all the kind words. Change the colour? I love the colour! Actually I have had a look tonight and the roof seems in fairly good shape apart from the stitching and the screen is quite clear so I will shop around to see about a repair. Took it for a spin last night which was my first chance and although I do notice the lack of torque its quite a revvy engine and I have to change my driving style from the diesel I am used to. After a few miles though the amber oil light came on so I had to drive home carefully before topping it up. There is no sign of a leak or burning so I am hoping it was a maintenance issue and not a head gasket! Coolant seems clean though and no smoke so deep breath and relax....

Welcome from the centre of Canada!! You've really bounced between the z3-4's and now back to the better car in my mind even though I have a 1.9 97. It is bulletproof and I drive it hard even though I'm a month away from 69. Good luck with the stitching, no sense changing if you have a solid top already!! JIM

There are several topics on here re. 2.2 using oil so not a big surprise. You clearly bought the wrong Z4 as if you had bought the 3.0 ( even the poor relation 3.0i, not the Si) you wouldn't be looking at the Z3. I had a Z3 2.0 and liked the car a lot, but IF it had been a 2.8 or preferably a 3.0 I wouldn't have bought my Z4. But now I have, I love my Z4 as an every day use car.

Welcome back to Z3 land.

Hi Stevey and welcome, if your willing to take a trip to softops in Crydon you can get a new roof for three hundred and something there's been recent threads on this topic lately as what you might pay for a repair it might be more economically to go for a new roof.
Have to agree that fitting a new roof would be the preferred option. The guy in Croydon did mine last year. His standard is without side pockets (which were added to improve folding), but for £400 he made and fitted mine with pockets. Took about 2 hours to fit and he made a really tidy job of it.
At your age it would be a day trip down to Croydon.
Enjoy your Zed'ing.

Apparently for the M54 engine BMW don't consider oil usage up to 1ltr per 600 miles to be a problem!!
My wife had an RX8, which uses engine oil to lubricate the rotor seals, and that only used 1ltr per 1000 miles.

Ah well mind at rest a bit for the oil then thanks. The first Z4 I had was a 3 litre but the guy I bought it from should have worn a Stetson and ridden horse called Trigger as he had dealt with the illuminated airbag light by disconnecting it and to do that he had taken out the instrument cluster and shortly after it came to me all the needles started playing up and so on> it was fault after fault and thought the sound and the engine were great I came to hate the thing.

That's a shame, but it would have put me off too mate. As long as you're happy with your new Z that's all that matters, be it a Z3 or Z4.

Oh I am. Just had a nice drive in the dark with roof down and the engine sounds great. just have to get in the habit of keeping the revs up (so in contrast to the diesel) or it dies a bit. Last fun car was a supercharged Jag with 400bhp so bit of a contrast but no less fun for it.
