Thank you for your replies when I introduced myself, I am now the proud owner of a 2.8 auto Z3, and apart from a few minor niggles, all easily fixable, I have a rather noisy transmission, It sort of grates a bit as it changes gear, not noticeable with the top down (as I test drove it...) but definitely there with the top up. Silent when cruising, and the shifts are nice and smooth, just noisy...

I got it on a ramp at my local garage, and it took a lot of fluid to top it up, just more than 2 full big syringes, over a litre I'd say. Still sounds the same, perhaps a bit less harsh. I think the next step is drop the pan and replace the filter.
I can't find any posts for noisy transmissions, so thought I'd ask if anyone has come across this?

My other things are, it tramlines a lot, one bush has more movement than the other, so new poly bushes I think
The headlight switch is not positive clicking onto high beam, and tends to switch itself back to diped
Needs passenger seat bushes, came with car, but not fitted yet
Drivers seat stuck on high, apparently just needs taken out and unstuck and greased
Slight whine from diff- will replace oil and perhaps put some soundproofing in the boot
Radio aerial broken
Alarm went off a few times, so now just locking on the key till I can look into that
Smells like its been smoked in, so deep clean come the summer

Got the software and cable for the codes, etc, so will be loading that up and checking when the weather improves!

All in all, well pleased with the lovely smooth engine, hope to fit cruise control and heating pads at some point

Hi - I have only had this problem slightly which I think was due to low level has been Ok since doing proper top-up.
I have the 1.9 auto so may be slightly different capacities. Did you do the final top up with engine running in P or N which is required method? On static there is only ~1 litre between fill plug and drain as drain plug is not at lowest point. I would go for strainer change next - If you drop the pan cover to change oil strainer there is ~3.5 more litres in there so lower it carefully. HTH

Yes, it was running, in P, I suspect the chap I bought it from did not have the engine running, He said he drained and refilled just before I bought it. My concern is I drove it 200 miles home (mostly motorway) before I got it properly filled....
