I had a 2000 2.0 Z3 Auto Fred (welcome from me near Lincoln by the way) and I now have a 3.0 Z4 Auto. Both great cars no issues with either.
@Jack Ratt has 2.8 Auto and @mwpe has a 3.0 Auto. I'm sure both of these guys will give you some info too.

Tony.

Yes I've got both 2.8 auto and 2.8 manual and they are very different driving experiences. The auto box is very smooth and quiet and fitted to the torquey 2.8 engine it is a very civilised drive. 0 to 60 is a very respectable 7.1 seconds (BMW figures). The 2.8 manual can be a bit of a hooligan car and it's dead easy to swing the back end round as many people on the forum have experienced a some time or other, some more frequently than others =)) I've never done it in the auto though.
You can still experience "spirited" driving if the mood takes you and if I had to sell one of my zeds, I'd keep the auto

I have a 3.0 auto and love it. it is the first auto car I have ever owned as I have always liked a manual gearchange but after driving a friends 2.5 Compact with the selectronic auto box I decided to give it a try. 117,00 miles later I am still happy with it. I still would not want the earlier type of auto box though.

Mine is a 2.2 Selectronic auto, and I love it.
I had never had an automatic before and I thought it would be a bit dull compared to a manual, but I have been pleasantly surprised.

Exactly why I bought a Z3 Auto 9 years ago, and why I bought a Z4 Auto too.;)

3.0 with steptronic box. Love it and so easy to drive. 0 to 60 times only a fraction of a second slower than a manual. In manual mode it can be a bit slow to change down but changing up is quicker than a manual in my opinion. Would recommend.
