If it doesn't check all these boxes then it's not a SE.

Take mine for istance: for the Dutch market they made a Sport Line that looks like the SE, albeit misses the lowered springs, the honeycomb grille, it has mat chrome interior but not brushed aluminum console, and styling 32 instead of styling 42.
Looking at that brushed aluminium, its nice confirm my 3.0 as a non SE. The differences would have meant a lot more when the cars were new as everybody rolling around on stock suspension and now alot of owners & enthusiasts here opting for lower or adjustable suspension.

Personally I'm not too fond of the honeycomb black grill either, although there probably are practical reasons for it, for me it makes the front look rather flat and hides those nicely shaped ribbed foils on the inside.

With the differences being very subtle and subject to change down the years do people think SE cars fetch a premium when sold? Or will they in the future market?

I don't think so: it's just that with an SE you know for sure the standard configuration, and many Z3 have been modded or upgraded along the years so chances are you never know (if you don't know how to use a VIN decoder ;)) what it had on at the time it rolled out the production line.

I personally agree with you, I'd like a lowered suspension setup that came stock, but with this being said and I'm not really bothered by all the other differences, furthermore the original owner played a bit with the Individual catalog giving it a very specific flair I really dig.
