Before spending much more money on parts for the 2.2 (thermostat/water pump/hoses are up next), I wanted to check the state of the driver's side sill. The sill cover is completely gone from 17 years of crud carrying duty.
Underneath:
How does this compare to what others have found on their zeds?
After hours of attacking it with wire wheels and a flat head screwdriver:
Followed by treatment with rust converter and two coats of rust inhibiting primer. Cavity waxoyl inside too:
I hope that's stopped the rot for the time being. I should apply a top-coat too at some point. POR15? Will it resist stone chips on the exposed parts I wonder?
The passenger side doesn't look as bad judging by the state of the sill cover but I can't say I'm looking forward to doing the other side! One for cooler weather.
I also did my first oil/filter change. The previous oil looked a good colour and was only a year and 1k miles old but anyway I replaced it with Castrol Edge 5w-30 LL. 6.5 litres on the nose.
Thanks for following my progress.
