Been out for a lovely drive this morning, it was a bit damp but not wet. If I put my foot down in 3rd, at around 65mph I'm getting traction control kicking in (light flashing) and limiting power. It cant be wheelspin at that speed!

I have got new tyres on but they're scrubbed now so shouldn't be that.... surely?

There is some sort of Rev / speed governor that kicks in when the ABS sensor is faulty, like a limp home mode.
I had this when I had a duff ABS sensor but in my case the light was on all the time (but the limiter didn’t kick on consistently).
I see in your case the brake warning light is not all the time. Can’t imagine it being anything else though.
You need a garage with some older diagnostic kit - my guy had a old snap on unit that would identify which sensor it was (apparently the newer ones don’t play so well with the old OBD on our MK1 cars just say ABS fault).

the good news is that ABS unit on our early cars is the good one and not the later type that fails often, so hopefully just the sensor.

I had a faulty rear abs sensor my abs then over rides the throttle body to reduce speed
Fitted new sensors cleaned sensor rings no more problems

Thanks boys. Will see who has a diagnostic for it. Will it need clearing once new parts fitted?
Wheres best to get the abs sensor from?
I'm pretty sure I have an abs control unit lying about in my shed from a 98 2.8 so useful if it is that.

Hi Dave,

Do you know yet if you need front or rear ABS sensor?

Hi Dave I would change all the wheel sensors there not expensive. As for your ABS module if you change it you will have to code it to your ECU I use INPA software or send it to ECU testing for testing to see if its faulty
If faulty it can be repaired by them and I use icarsoft diagnostics with a 20 pin adaptor plug for the ECU socket in the engine bay you can also jack up the car plug in diagnostics and spin wheel to find faulty wheel sensor
