All of the “how to’s” that I looked at online prior to attempting the job suggested that you had to remove the carrier. If the disk can be removed without removing the carrier then I wasted a lot of time!!!

It can't

My bad, I was going from memory, have checked the how to's and agree that the carrier has to be removed.
Sometimes it's possible when solid discs are fitted but I've not come across where vented discs are used. On some cars you can unbolt the pad carrier from the calliper (mainly Peugeot Citroen cars) but you need a pentagonal socket (5 flats).

I've rounded a couple on my old and current zed, got them off with a smaller socket and breaker bar or impact gun in the end.

Also when I put one back in I didn't tighten it up enough and it flew out on the way to Zedfest at Silverstone in the fast lane on the motorway. It flipped the carrier round and scored all the wheel. There were some horrible noises and the brakes didn't work too well, managed to limp to the services and used a wheel bolt as a temporary replacement.
