Given the sometimes shocking driving we all see on our roads are the driving test requirements correct in the UK? Should re-tests be put in place? is one test in your life time enough?

Thought a poll would be interesting.

Completely agree with periodic testing.

I do agree with retraining like the old MOT system used to be. Everyone arrived a tester and left a tester at the end of the course.
I'm not sure about re testing as such, unless you've been involved in an incident regular retraining ought to sufficient.

Tony.

Would just be another money making scam like CPC. Being able to pass a test doesn't make you a competent driver just someone whos good at tests. Just my opinion!

I agree with Paul but think a 10 year test could be beneficial. I think though after someone hits 70 it should be every 5. It's all set up wrong anyhow. I only need take my HGV the once but if I don't do 35 hours of cpc which is the biggest load of sh*** anyway my HGV becomes invalid.

Yes I think a retest should be done , every 10 years , just to keep people on their toes :p

A test does not keep people on their toes. Training does!

I'm on the fence with this one. Driving for a living I am bombarded with training courses to keep our driving upto speed but generally with figures to prove it does absolutely nothing to slow down the accident rate.
Lorry drivers see it all as a pain in the ass. I used to be a trainer in more than one of my jobs and keeping people interested was hard. Lorry drivers always say "I've passed my test so why do I need to do this"?
At least a test may flush out the worst drivers and get them off the road.

More traffic cops instead of relying on cameras would identify bad drivers

Two types of bad drivers , a re test would get rid of the inept but what about the flipping ignorant, impatient ones who probably cause more accidents that the inept

Good point

Re training would go a ways towards reminding people that their cars have I indicators and it's not too tiring to use them and they won't wear out.

All testing should be done in 1960/70s cars without ABS/traction/power steering/front wheel drive/sat nav and any other driver aids.
Modern cars are "white goods" for most in that they get you from A to B, insulated from the world and without really requiring you to take an interest in driving well.
Other drivers should also be aware that roads are for Z3s and lesser vehicles are only tolerated.
Seriously though, only sensible policing would make any difference at all, and this is most unlikely to happen. We are dooooooooooomed!:(

All this aside I'm impressed the Forum gives me a Portuguese flag as I'm in Madeira and the Z3 is in its garage under a blanket in East Yorkshire

Mandatory assessment at 70 and every 5 years thereafter and a mandatory theory test every 10 years for me. When was the last time any of us picked up the Highway Code and read it in recent years, if ever?

I think periodic testing would help in reducing accidents and bad driving, even it just picked up on peoples deteriorating vision.

Retest every 10 years.
The deliberately lazy incompetents would quickly learn that keeping good driving standards is cheaper (and less hassle) than failing re-tests
The roads would be quieter too.
HMG would get lots of cash off those failing. Standards should improve and fewer speeding fines handed out as a consequence.
Also those getting 12 points (even if let off in court) or any due care offence should have a mandatory retest following a minimum 10 hours lessons.
Just make it cheaper to drive well and earn the rights to be able to keep driving.

Interestingly a few years ago (sorry can not recall at what age) I had to give up certain sections of my licence. This was interesting because I never new I could drive some of the vehicles.
I think the matter of retest should be brought in , the big arguement will be at what age ,or how long after passing your original test , and frequency there're after.
At my age we have to agree our eye sight is ok , I think this should be changed to having to produce a optician certificate to prove eyesight. I found it unbelievable the story an optician told us regarding this matter.

All our company vehicle drivers, ie vans, lorries, cars, have to do an annual online assessment, ie Highway Code, spotting hazards, etc and we also have to do an annual eye test
