Don't tell everybody, but the M44 is the best Z3 of the lot, in the round. It handles better, is more economical, less cost to maintain the engine, is just as fast as any in the real world and cheaper to purchase. Depreciation is negligible, if at all. Buy the very best and you will still have over £10K change over a Z3M. Most Z3Ms now are not used daily (owners are too concerned about mileage devaluing their garage queen).
Simples really, buy one of the best for under £3K, look after it, drive it regularly and you won't lose much (if any) money if you sell. But don't tell everybody, we do not want to become owners of garage queens!!

You can get a good 2.8 for £3k, your not trying to tell us that a M44 is in the same league when it comes to fun are you. ;)

Absolutely yes. There is far more satisfaction driving a sorted M44 in the real world than a ZM. Both are fine cars, but the M envelope is hard to approach/exploit whilst keeping a license intact on public roads. Both are fine cars, in very different ways.:)

Has anyone read my write up on a 1.9 ZCAR? I had more fun in that on track than the 3.2
The 1.9 cornering is awesome
The 1.9 may not hold value as much as the others but a decent one someone will always pay a little more regardless of engine size

But thats a track car that has been set up for the track and has probably been lightened and tuned, its not comparable to a road going car.

I had a sorted 2.0l and found it too restrictive when it came to straight line grunt and unpredictable when cornering, by this I mean over steer, when I took the 2.8 out its became quite obvious that over steer is all about your right foot :D whereas the 2.0l was all about balls.

I just treat mine as a 21 year old classic and drive it as such sure it's no rocket but technology moves on.
If it's speed and mega handerling I want I just jump in my other car.;)

My other car isn't rear wheel drive which makes it rather boring

We all differ, I want speed and handling out of my classic, there is plenty of technology in a 21 year old Z3 :D

Unless super low mileage and amazingly specified they won't be worth anything near the 6 cylinders

I got my Z3 sub-1k but over 100k miles so I know it won't be worth much ever. But good 1.9s might be worth more compared to similar roadsters of that year/time period.
Also the 140bhp 1.9L may be worth more than the 118bhp and 1.8L variants so there is that!

MGs, the MR2 Roadster and the ugly SLK are pretty forgettable.

MX-5s will only ever be that, an MX-5. Nothing fantastic but a good car. Shame a lot of the MK1s are all rusted/drifters/DIY turbo'd.

The Boxster isn't comparable to the 1.9l but only a few standout varients may increase in value.

I guess we'll see!

Cheers all. I’ll get shot. That will please the wife as there’s another empty space on the drive

I've considered getting a daily driver to keep the miles off my six cylinder. Were I to do so, I think I'd find it very hard to look past a cheap 1.9 for all the reasons stated above:thumbsup: And agreed a 1.9 is an infinitely more solid choice than contemporary Mx5s and MGs!

I bought my 2000 1.8 as I just love the styling! Wasn’t worried about the engine size as it’s my summer toy and even the 1895 (M43) engine compared to my daily drive is enough at my age! Also means it’s cheap to run… well that’s what I tell the wife!

Was thinking of selling but now it’s back on the road for the summer have fallen in love with it all over again. With the price they’re selling for at the moment it’s not worth selling so tidying it up (not that it needs much) and keeping it – especially as it has under 84k on the clock.
