Afternoon all,

Just a quick question.

Does anyone have kids at Uni? If so do you give them 'spending money' to top up their student loan or provide some sort of care package when you visit?

I'm currently at Uni, and working and my parents don't give me any sort of spending money as such, but I do take food away with me when I visit home.

What do you guys do?

I personally think if your at uni you should have some money :p
I'd give my daughter/son money :)
After all I hope my children will look after me when I get much older :)
But if your got a small income why do you need your parents money :)

If I was to ask my parents I know they'd help me out, I just wondered what opinions people had.

There's a range of people at Uni, some have all of their accommodation paid for, Others get nothing, some have all of their fees and living expenses paid as well as spending money.

Some live at home for free and get all of their student loan to spend on booze and other activities.

My current keeper's son is in his final year at Uni. Apart from the year he spent on placement working and earning they have paid virtually all the rent for his accommodation while he's been there.
 
We said to ours the student loan is to educate you so they paid fees and learning to socialise and we paid accommodation and food. The youngest finished 5 years ago now so was cheaper then
 
My lad is in his final year at Crewe. He is very sensible with money and his student loan almost stretches. Us and his grandparents give him huge food parcels regularly. He has asked for help with his car tax and insurance this year but we do not give him cash to spend on whatever as we feel he has to learn and understand life doesn't come on a plate. He does appreciate what we give him. Myself and Jue have never been given anything from our parents, we were both told to get on with life, sink or swim!

Hi Connor our daughter is final year at Hull studying music, she Has fees and living grant & part time bar work and does really well to manage her money. We pick up the bill for accommodation and she has a monthly allowance into her account when I get paid and we fill her car with fuel for the return journey - soft touch or what. Seriously though she gets as much help as we can afford. She will have more debt than I had at that age...!

Both our boys went to uni, one went to Cardiff the other went to Swansea. For 2yrs they were both there at the same time. We helped where we could financially and both of them worked part time too where they could.

Despite our help they both finished uni with a huge debt each.
 
What you also have to remember is it depends on what a family can afford. I'm sure all parents will do everything within there means to help there kids, if we could afford to do more of course we would.
 
Our Abbie is to train to be a Midwife but the thing is , since she decided on this huge change in her life the Govt. has decided to end the bursary for the training and it finishes the month before her course starts. She will get to the end of this with debts of up to £9,000 before getting on with job she's trained for. Much help will be required in many forms from all the family with two young sons to look after.

The reason I proposed the question was I've had a bit of an idea.

A service for parents to get a supply parcel delivered to the students accommodation, so as a parent you're making sure that the student always has the essentials instead of spending all of their money on beer!

Would be like a monthly subscription service.

It sounds like there are some good parents around!

Depends on the parents financial circumstances really. If they haven't got two farthings to rub together then multiple part time jobs it is. If they've got a couple of £'s then they should help where they can IMHO. If they are minted then nothing as it gives said student the opportunity to understand the value of money. Me and Mrs Mac on the other hand would sleep in a bus shelter for our babies, but that's just us. If life was easy we'd all be doing it. Harsh but fair. Other views are available.
 
the money we have spent on our children is worth staying in debt for.i sometimes think people don't realise how much it's going to cost to raise a family and the sacrifices you have to make financially and emotionally.But you make your choice and have to make the best job you can of it.Would I be driving a difrent car ?probably .Would I change anything ?NO WAY
 
This raises a very interesting point.Never mind children at Uni,what about your children who have grown up and left home.
My children never went to Uni but they left home many years ago and are doing fine but still struggling with living expenses and mortgage payments.
I reckon I still subsidise them to the extent of 20% of my income.:(
