We are getting the ferry to Santander and doing a road trip around the mountains in Northern Spain.
Some of the hotels only have parking on the street in the village, but l am assured that it's fine.
It's a first for us. We usually fly to Greece.
The dilemma is, which vehicle to go in....Z3 3.0 or Defender 110.

Drove down a couple of hours south of Barcelona in the Galaxy a few years back and then on to various places. Can't say I came across or saw any dramas to be honest with cars in general (sports or otherwise). A bit like most places really, just find somewhere good to park.

There's a hotel in Pamplona town centre which is pedestrianised but has a secure underground car park 100 metres away.

We're up in the mountains, booked four hotels two have parking the others are "park in local street"
"Never had a problem in 15 years" says booking agent.
Wife wants to go in the Land Rover.

It'll drive you mad after a couple of hundred miles.
That's the fun of it mate, I have had 4 wheel drives, one had huge sand tires, small steering wheel, bucket seats etc.
SOB to keep in a straight line on the road though.

I had a series 2 some years ago. Did more steering keeping it straight than going round bends!

Took a Megane vert down a few years age (car was new R Reg). Went on a deal to Santander then staying in some great hotels but can not recall the name of the chain. I would not fancy doing it in a defender, unless I intended keeping off the Tarmac. Must admit to a couple of hairy moments in mountains when I got very very lost. Very odd looks from indigenise population driving in snow with top off. Later that year took same car to Italy ,had hood up and air con on.

That's sounds like driving our old ser 1 LR that had been coiled ,fitted with a V8 motor and running on SAT,s.
Makes me shudder that we were cutting them up, they cost £500 then.

Take the Z without a doubt. Keep the luggage to a minimum and top down in the mountains. Done the crossing to Santander a few times on "The Love Boat", get merry before the cabaret starts and it's almost enjoyable. Driving in rural Spain is a totally different ball game to this country, you will have a blast, but not in a 110.
(Other opinions are available.)

Definitely take the Z... having done most of the Pyrenees on a motorbike & having no problem with security and some amazing fast roads with awesome bends, why would you want to take the Defender, leave that for the off road stuff for which it's designed for.
Only advantage of the Defender is the Wife can take more luggage & you can bring back more beer & .
Good luck either way.

Take the zed.No contest.
I took mi 3.0 series 3 this year due to the zed breaking down on morning of departure.
Tbh as quick and agile on the twisty bits as the 3 ser is we didnt really felt cheated and it did spoil the enjoyment to a certain degree.

I would suggest the security problems are considerably worse in the Uk than in rural France where we live & no different in the Spanish/French Pyrernees. No traffic, awesome bends, stunning scenery & the top down in your Z3.
Just put a detachable boot rack on & that solves any luggage concerns.
