Just been for a blast albeit only a few miles, first half with the MAF connected then disconnected, no change at all.
Next step I suppose is to change the MAF, anyone know how much for a new one, I did think of asking @spurs fan in a coupe @Synclare or @mrscalex if they have any, but then it’s an unknown quantity I suppose as any used ones would be at least 18 years old.
Can they be checked with a multi meter for certain values?

Don't think there is any test you can do on it apart from watching it perform using live data on a diagnostic system.
No codes were found relating to the Maf when we checked yesterday which in my experience was no surprise these things don't always set a code relating to a fault with it. Will put HandsomeJacks M44 on INPA when we get around to it and compare his with what we saw on yours.

OK thanks Colin. Be interesting to see what the difference is between mine and HandsomeJacks.

Just priced up a MAF £382.10, nearly fell on my a**e. Anyone know of an alternative aftermarket one.

Was that from BMW?
Just looked what Europarts can supply found this one, not an OEM part so can't comment on reliability.

Might be worth taking a punt on a used part from one of the breakers on this forum or trawl ebay for a Bosch or Seimens used one.
Local at Bargoed has one reputed to be a working one here

Yes Sytners Cardiff.
I'll look into that one in Bargoed, thanks Colin.

Just had a look at the MOT history of the car and its failed on emissions a few times since 2010 so looks like an ongoing problem that has not been reliably fixed over the years. Whats the oil consumption,is it burning oil?
The smell of fuel from the exhaust points to over rich fueling which in the great scheme of things is controlled by what the Maf and Lambda sensor are seeing so it narrows the faulty components down to Maf and or Lambda both of which are expensive to change. Catch 22 do you replace the suspect parts, only going to know by biting the bullet and trying it.
Whats the temp guage showing when up to temp, is it sitting in the middle at 12 o'clock? Just had a thought that temp sensor would also contribute to fueling issue.

Have you had an emissions test done? Think we might have a similar issue, see MOT fail thread.

Hi Ztec,
If you think the MAF needs replacement, a couple of people (including me) have had success with fitting a used MAF. Mine was genuine BMW / Siemens? And I got it for £30. And if it didn’t work I could send it back and get my money back. I think maybe @gookah did this too? May be wrong but I’d consider a used one definitely.

Connor.

It’s not using oil at all, going to start wit a used MAF and take it from there.

Indeed I did, one used MAF for £35 from eBay and all was well and has been ever since. That was 6 months ago.

Well, replacement MAF fitted, feels likes it idling better and general overall drive sounds better, or is it just me? I suppose it a bit early to see any change in fuel consumption?

Sounds promising, give it time to settle in, good excuse to give it some long runs.

when i run Torque app on mine i can see the maf values changing when i open / close throttle and can log max min values, also o2 sensors on mine show the pre cat voltage fluctuating as it should and the the post cat i think is a flat line with an occasional change, i pretty sure mine has two o2 sensors same car 1.9 m44 1998.. also you can monitor fuel trims on torque and see how much they alter over time theres a long term fuel trim and short term fuel trim..i try and pop down to colins sometime this week and plug it into his inpa as i not tried inpa yet....
