yesterday I went out and washed the car being a nice sunny day here took off the magnetic stone chip guards washed car and noticed under neath them small blisters in the paint on both sides ( O. M.G ) I said to myself amongst other expletives. Phoned my nephew who had sprayed the car and explained what I had found and he said “ metal flake paint and magnetic pads do not go together very well” magnets do something to pull the paint away on normal paint never mind with metal flake in it. The other problem is being holographic he can’t just patch it he has to blend it so can’t just do the 2 rear wings. Oh dear more expense don’t think they will be going back on.

Do you leave them on all the time?

I was always told to take them off when not in use as it causes the issue you have experienced

They are far more trouble than they are worth IMO.

I did but took them off once a week when I washed car cleaned and polished under them and replaced them. They do look nice on but like you say I think I will get paint sorted and only put them on now and then if at all.

I have mine fitted 24/7 and no issues at it may be down to paint that's newer than the original.
Not great :( someone else found the paint was effected by them can not remember who it was.

I don’t know as I said he seems to think it’s the flake and the magnetic affect on the paint. Trouble is that when it bubbles you get water trapped in the bubbles not good. So now I’m worried that the soft top cover I use has like button magnets in it will I have a problem with this, but this is taken off every day as car is in constant use.

Or maybe t's a convenient scapegoat? Just saying.

Tony.

Not a bad though Tony but when I change my panels over I’ll conduct an experiment on one of my old front wing panels that were resprayed and put a magnetic guard on there for a few months to see if it lifts anything. I know Cosmos Black is not a custom colour but has some flecks to simulate.

Maybe it is worse on recent paint mate. I certainly had no issues on my Z3 with magnetic stoneguards.

Tony.

Just wary Tony as I’ve got all new secondhand panels that were resprayed over the existing paint last summer so paint is well and cured but might be interesting if the magnetic gaurds do have an effect. Maybe something to be gained or a waste of time with my experiment but at least we can have an answer. On fresh paint I would definitely say a big no to using magnetic gaurds but can it have an effect on ‘cured’ panels remains to be seen. I have a panel in the name of Zed science to sacrifice to the greater good:D ok I’m getting carried away but it won’t hurt to try before the skip or eBay.

I feel your pain i recently had to have my car resprayed 2 doors both back wings, started out as micro blisters after a few hard frosts the the laquer just flaked off.
Even though my car looked great paintwork last year it quickly turtur bad.
The guy who did mine had to rub it back hard to take the new paintwork it now looks fantastic a few people that have seen it will agree.
My bodyshop said obviously it had been done before but a poor job either sprayed damp or not rubbed down properly his opinion the latter it pays to have a person who know what they are doing.
Good luck getting yours sorted.

Me too Ant, I have had them on since just after I painted it with no issues whatsoever so I don't think the age of the paint comes into it.

Thanks for your post that was bad luck. Mine is my fault as I say because I didn’t realise that leaving them on all the time would do that to the paint, having said that I think now thinking back the guy I bought them from did say don’t leave them on and make sure you clean under them.
Took it over to see the lad that sprayed it it’s got to have both rear wings and doors done so he can blend it in. Lucky he still has some of the flake from when he did the job and some candy, just have to buy the base coat and labour and pray it’s not gone through primer.

Hows things in Salisbury?
You got your Bio Hazard suit on?
Well it’s like this there are lots of little green glowing creatures running around, and the cemetery on London road is still under police guard. The P.M paid a visit today.

It’s all the businesses I feel sorry for all the money they are losing and can’t claim back on insurance and people not earning a wage. God knows how long they will be closed down.
