Another One Bites The Dust

B&Q Lincoln is a busy store, I think the "Trade" counter helps along with the "Butty" van in the car park. It is also situated next door to Morrison's supermarket on Triton Rd.

Tony.

Most people don't know about Screwfix. The carpark at B&Q in Coventry is always busy.
Screwfix is a fantastic concept Ian. Eurocell are opening trade counters at the rate of 2 a month and have done for the last year. They are all next to or as near as possible to screwfix counters. We do really well from their customers.

My local B&Q always seems busy ... it’s on a large retail though so difficult to know if people are parking and going elsewhere.
We have lost 2 B&Q locally in the last 18 months. The company fell out with a large landlord as they demanded lower rental on their stores. The landlord gave them notice on a lot of stores as they had B&M home stores waiting in the back ground to take the sites over.

I'm not bothered about Mothercare or Debenhams etc but the places that get on my t*ts are the vast array of coffee shops that are sprouting up all over the place. I accept that I'm in the minority in the fact that I don't like the taste or smell of anything even remotely coffee flavoured but surely one even 100 square miles or so would be enough.
Shut 'em all and open more broth........ =))

I would have to disagree with that.. coffee shops are popular because people use them. Simple. Also a lot prefer coffee to going in a pub to have site meetings too. Just saying.

I worked with 3 of their rejects for the last 10 years :(

Tony.

wow that's a coincidence

I also know 3 ex Halfords mechanics that used to work with a reject , and for 10 years ....just the same

but they tell me he has retired now.

Wait for it..........

And now Sainsburys is reporting a 92% (92% !) drop in pre-tax profit. M&S previously reported a problem with clothing and food was good so thinking of maybe splitting the business.

Is there ANY business thats doing well at the moment . . . ? Sad days . . .

Yep. Amazon, ebay, alibaba, to name a few. The world has changed, and we're all part of it. I've got stuff winging its way here from China, didn't seem to be any local manufacturers offering something similar, so that's where it's coming from. And if you look to the left, you'll see a picture of my girl wearing her head collar in Welsh colours (red, white, green, got her name etched into the metalwork). Can you guess where I had to get them made? Yes indeed, China. I'd much rather have had them made here, but couldn't find anyone to do it, and beyond my capabilities. Sold a few hundred, too.:)

The issue is these businesses are failing to understand and adapt to the digital world we now live in.
Many will become dinosaurs and become extinct.
What Apple are doing with Apple TV is a Disruptor and has far reaching implications for TV, cinema and entertainment.

Actually okay - yes, I take your point. And as an example . . .

Yesterday I decided to pop in to Huddersfield Currys to look at a couple of keyboards in the flesh - and for an unusual adapter (mini display port to HDMI) - which to be honest I wasnt sure they would have. But I wanted to feel a couple of keyboards (it was a wireless one for my linux laptop, and a backlit one for the 'house' desktop that Herself usually uses).

Well. Currys apparently had a fire in August (shows how often I go in then) - I never knew. So its closed. And to cap it all, with various roadworks and closures, traffic was a nightmare. Instead of 20 mins each way it was a 1.5 hour round trip. Grrrrrr . . . . Had to have a restorative when I got home (thank goodness I'd remembered to put them in the fridge). There might have been more than one . . .

So last night, I went on Amazon. Instead of looking and touching/feeling things, I looked at Reviews from people who had previously purchased them. I then 'primed' the various items selected (in different batches I might add), free delivery. All 4 boxes were delivered - together - at 10 past twelve today.

Why the heck did I try and visit an actual store yesterday ?

So I take your point. Amazon is a growth business. Delivery drivers - thats another growth business. Except the ones around here - pleasant though they are - seem to have mostly eastern European accents.

Still sad though, for the state of British retailing . . .

And we've managed to stray right off the topic of enjoying Zeds, so I'll shuttup now !

Money as we know it - notes and coins - will become obsolete as everything converts to digital.

Is there a business or sector doing well? Delivery is growing as more and more people opt to buy online. This, unsurprisingly, is leading to people having no interpersonal skills as more and more lives are lived via devices. This has contributed to a worldwide birth decrease.

Financial services and the legal professional are both ripe for Disruption. Aka as Massive Complete Change.

Saw the M&S Christmas ad in the week. Interestingly, it’s focus was on the food aspect with two tv presenters who are not the typical or rather, not who you would expect M&S to have represent it; both are more mainstream, Saturday night tv entertainment at about 7pm.

I’ll be interested to see if there’s another ad for the wider M&S brand appear.

If not, this will be a strong indication of how this brand’s future is being planned, IMO.
