Tony, just curious, but is the rust confined to just that area where they break, or is the whole of the chassis covered in rust?
Colin.
Hi Colin, I just saw this mate. Obviously the worst affected area was just a t the rear of the cab but the reports suggest it wasn't just confined to that specific part of the chassis rails. Fairly scary stuff.

My God Frankie, that is incredible mate. With the UK M.O.T. system that would have been off the road a LONG time ago mate. No wonder they begged you not to drive it.:eek::eek:

Since this has happened, I have been looking at different web sites for Toyota trucks just to see if there is a frame out there in good shape. I have been very surprised to see hardly and trucks being parted out. These trucks are, with the exception of the bad frame, very well made. I probably would have seen all these problems if I had had to work on something that broke but nothing went bad in 3 years! I had the oil changed at the shop since they do it for what it would cost me or less so I never had to get under the truck. So what I'm saying is that there are a lot of people that own these trucks and used parts are hard to come by. So I put it on e-bay and there have been a few bids on it already. Started at $695. and its up to $821. So maybe I'll get something out of it towards another truck.............Frankie
Here's the e-bay site: https://www.ebay.com/itm/222804391621?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649

Frankie sorry to here about your problem, don't you have a yearly mot in the USA or some kind of yearly inspection ? looking at that chassis i can only agree with the others as to break it up and sell off as much as possible or would they offer a trade in if you brought a new Toyota truck as good will jesture

The State of New Jersey used to have a more detailed inspection but since a severe budget cirses have cut back on everything. Now they only check emissions and that's only every 2 years. No one checks for brakes, shocks, rust or anything else. It makes it a dangerous place to drive now..............Frankie

Hi Tony,
Yes, I have just seen the pictures. I think they explain it all!
What I do not understand is, they, Nissan, say it is a design fault and there is no problem if the vehicle is maintained and serviced. But, if the metal used is poor quality in the first place, no amount of maintenance and servicing is going to stop it rusting like that. Unless of course, it is sprayed very regularly. And how many folk are going to do that? Similar vehicles do not have the same problem, surely. Yes, metal will of course rust overtime, but these are the worse cases I have ever seen. Even some of the agriculture machines from the fifties I have worked on, that have been outside in all weathers, are nowhere near as bad.
Then they have the nerve to say it's a design fault! The only design fault is in using low grade materials.
Basically they have put peoples lives at risk and do not want to know!
That's my rant over:confused:. It's just my opinion, of course. But it does make me angry to see something preventable like this happening.
My sincere best wishes go to Frankie and I hope he will be able to get some sort of justice.
Colin.

Bloody hell Frankie I’m glad you had it in for something to be shown this had to think what could have happened if the chassis had snapped at ‘freeway’ speeds let alone motorway way speeds. Best just to break it for the best parts unless someone can trailer it away. To be honest prity shocked at Toyota compared to the vehicle that had so much abuse by top gear.

the metal has'nt been treated , a bit like the fords in the seventies , I took delivery of a brand new cortina which had three rust spots on it, they said dont worry sir will treat them , and i accepted that. know i'd tell them to keep it.
the car rusted very quickly and i traded it in for a new escort

I’d get a second opinion. They coold just be trying to cover their behind telling you not to drive it.
Main dealers have been know to tell a lie or two...
I take that back after the seeingvthe pics!
For once I agree with a main dealer diagnosis- that’s F......!
Last time I saw pickups like that legally on the road was in Africa. New Jersey sounds fun....rusted trucks and guns ;)

Well, with about 48 hours left the bidding is up to $4450. I knew someone would want the truck for engine, body and interior.

@FRANKIE - How much have you got into the Taco?

I can't remember exactly what I paid for it. It was either 6200 or 6500. I can't possibly think what these bidders are thinking. You can see by my description of the truck that it has major rust problems. I even stated that: "This is a good truck for those that feel they can repair the frame which would be difficult if not impossible." So I think that the bidders want the truck for other purposes. I have to admit that in searching for Toyota parts trucks that I could only find one. So I think parts are at a premium.Perhaps that is my only good fortune. I'll beleive it when the cash is in my hand and they are towing the truck away...................Frankie

Hope they put it on a flatbed, looks like it’ll snap if you lift it by the front!

Your item sold for $4,450.00

The winning bidder was notified of his winning the auction by E-bay. He didn't contact me. I contacted him to congratulate him and asked him when he could pick up the truck. No answer. I contacted him again. He finally e-mailed in Spanish to say he couldn't buy the truck. I had to relist the truck again. An established bidder placed the first bid on the truck. Then a second bidder bid over him. I had placed a restriction on the bidders that they have an existing record with E-bay and a feedback of at least 5 with a good rating. The second bid on the truck was from someone from Cameroon who just "joined" yesterday with no rating. I had his bid removed. Just another fun day in the USA.........................................Frankie

Yeah, eBay is terrible for sellers any more. Between the ridiculous fees and the inaction to stop bogus bidders, no recourse for nonpayments, etc., I can’t stand it.

Best of luck this time around! Post up the auction link on TacomaWorld if you can.
