When I was in Riyadh, I used to drive past the Camel market at Janadriya which IS North East of Riyadh. Some of those animals (like all species I guess) really are beautiful. No really. They can also each be worth more than USD1,000,000 and more. So I get this story . . .

But an aside. At the back of Riyadh Greens Golf Course, there was a more . . . not so exalted camel herd just behind the 2nd green. I dont know about spitting, but they absolutely REEK. Oh man, they have a special unique and concentrated odour. If the breeze was in the wrong direction, some days putting was a struggle because your eyes were watering . . .

I heard of this years ago when I was watching a documentary about camels in Australia. Weirdly enough Australia has the largest camel population in the world and they cause so much chaos they have to be routinely culled. One segment was about a Saudi talent scout looking for beautiful camels to take back to enter a beauty contest. Fascinating.
