Evening everyone,

Thank you for letting me onto the forum. I hope to be able to pick some experienced brains as to the foibles of a z3 and in time be able to pass this knowledge onto others!

I've recently bought an early 2001 1.9 Wide bodied Z3 in titan silver. It's a bit rough around the edges but went through it's last MOT without any advisories, and comes with a very good service history for its 112000 miles!

So my first question is what fault code reader do you all use/prefer. I've tried a C110 off ebay, but it just gives error messages regarding communication errors! I've tried all permutations of key positions etc etc - unplugging and replugging the reader in but with no success! That's one to be returned so what are the alternatives?

By means of recommendation I thought I would mention this stuff! https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004B8GTQG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I was having a slight issue with a leak bretween the roof seal and the passenger window - 2 applications of seems to have nourished the rubber enough to seal the gap - having driven through some torrential rain tonight I'm quietly confident it has sorted it!

Assuming you're connecting your code reader to the round port in the engine bay it's likely the contacts need cleaning to make good contact.

Tony.

ps. Welcome from near Lincoln by the way.

Hi and welcome from me in Scotland :welcome:.
As mentioned c110 used by a few of us works fine on my 99 facelift zed.
Also as mentioned by @t-tony you need to be using a 16 pin to 20 pin adapter and using diagnostic plug under bonnet ( obd2 port under steering column gives limited access only ).
Stephen.
