An Awesome Day!

You’ll need to make sure they can do 4-wheel alignment. Many places only do tracking.

But there is nothing they can adjust anyway on the rear to the best of my knowledge. Doesn’t mean to say you shouldn’t do a 4-wheel alignment for the satisfaction of knowing it’s straight.

The rear is not adjustable I'm afraid Dawn.
The only way of reducing rear tyre wear is to replace the rear beam bushes as far as I'm aware.

There is NO adjustment on the rear suspension of a Z3 Dawn so if someone offered to do it they'll be wasting time and your money. By all means have the front checked/adjusted.

Tony.

Not on a standard Z3 rear end as I understand it?

Tony.

If my memory serves me right tyre wear on the inside rear of a Z3 is due to the (non adjustable) negative camber built into this model for rear tyres and pretty sure the only way to get round this problem is tyre rotation if you’ve purchased tyres that can be,with the wider rear wheel option on so many the problem is made worse with max tyre width on the rear. There is a kit that can be fitted to allow for adjustments but obviously BMW didn’t see the need as their recommended tyre width and rotation would in their opinion give relatively reasonable wear. Get matching wheel widths all round and rotate tyres is one answer, or just buy new rear tyres more often. Don’t turn up at MOT without checking rear inside wear cos it won’t be obvious looking from the outside. Does that make sense.??? Or am I teaching granny to suck eggs. Probably am to most of you. Well I’ll stand corrected if I’m wrong cos my memory is not what it used to be and I only had a Z3 for 11yrs. Now what on earth did I have for my dinner yesterday.:bored:

Like I said, time and money.

More time, more money

Not the sort of thing to be done in a moment, but as part of a rear axle overhaul, as many on here have done, might as well spend a bit extra and then watch the ATS blokes face when he sees that you can adjust it.

Is the general consensus of opinion the rear can be done but not be a tracking place? I've always been told that the rear tyres ran unevenly due to the design - a roadster - and accept that the car will run (no pun intended) through tyres quickly.

You'll need a wheel alignment place to set it up, but the adjustable bits need some kind of reasonably competent person to fit. Not difficult, and there's plenty of people on here who've taken their rear axle out, that's the biggest bit of the modification, just getting to it all. If the rear crossbeam bushes are shot then that will exaggerate the camber problem, due to the way the rear suspension works. And if they haven't already been changed then I'd hazard a guess that they are, indeed, totally bu88ered. Another technical term, that.

I'm finding it very interesting that our forum has such a wealth of knowledge, first-hand experience and expertise - and garages don't. I'm rapidly coming to the experienced conclusion that general mechanics in the vast majority of garages don't have a clue...other than hitting sale targets...I don't want to sound cynical but I have experienced this.

In fairness to the general garage trade most of the guys who work in garages these days won't have any experience or expertise of working on Z3s, probably only born around the time they came out and yes this does include BMW technicians too. It's a fact of life and when you add that to the fact that we, in general, only "specialise" in one or two specific car models, we should be more knowledgeable. I don't mean to say I condone "ripping people off" , I think you all know my views on that, but then again that is management not the guy on the shop floor.

Tony.

To be fair. These days garages employ technicians. Not mechanics. If the lap top can not be plugged in and the errors appear with how to do it the stock answer is that we could not find anything wrong. The computer said no

So to be fair, when something old school appears. It’s Christ what do we do with it. :(

But that is the garage trade these days Paul, and it's not the fault of the lads who do the job. They are simply not trained to remember the thing I was told as an apprentice. 4 stroke cycle is ...........................

and it doesn't matter how much high tech manufacturers put on it the Infernal combustion engine will always have to run on that principal

SUCK, SQUEEZE, BANG, BLOW.

Tony.

Plus Tony they charge to ‘read the codes’ yet alone start any work

:wideyed: We still talking cars Tony?
Yes. We're talking whether rear wheel tracking is possible on our cars or not, and whether garages can do such a job.

...whether rear wheel tracking is possible on our cars or not...
Not as standard Dawn, but as detailed above the rear can be modified to allow it;)

As per the modern mechanics, my friend always looked up the job on the internet before committing to do it for/with me. Didn’t need to know a lot about the model as he served a proper apprenticeship as with Tony. The internet would normally throw up any likely problems so made him aware of what might crop up. The internet along with my manufactures W/Shop manual was a great help. So if your mechanic isn’t familiar with your model and says he’ll look it up first on the net he’s probably sound.

Too right Roy, the Internet is just another tool mate.
