Today as we drove back from @t-tony's, we encountered quite a few tractors on the road. Now when I'm driving, I like to think we will get there, that means I drive as fast as the speed limits allow. As we all know Tractors travel at 30mph and the drivers will never pull in and let the traffic that builds up behind pass. My anger however is not directed at the tractor drivers, but at the drivers of the cars behind who refuse to even contemplate overtaking the tractor, even if the road ahead is clear for a mile. These people stick doggedly behind the tractor and of course, if there are enough of them, it makes it very difficult for those of us who have blood still circulating around our veins to overtake, because you are not overtaking one vehicle, but five. I always encounter these types when I'm in the Merc, Mrs EnthuziazT's shopping trolley, which is not known for its lightning acceleration, even in sport mode. So we wait until we hit a bit of duel carriageway, when, the tractor and the five following cars take the slow lane and I, quietly relieved, go like the blazes.

I was stuck behind a tractor when going to visit @t-tony, patiently followed it for 3 miles before the driver pulled over and allowed me and all those behind me to overtake. =))

Overtaking is scary business in a 1.9
 
And this is why right the answer to any question about engine size is always: the biggest you can afford!
 
I sometimes wonder why tractors have to travel so far on public roads. Do these farmers have such vast estates?

It's probably because it's cheaper to drive the tractor using red diesel than any other vehicle.
 
Tractor Speed are limited on the road by law to 25mph but the drivers are under no obligation to pull over and let faster traffic by. Thats the problem. Working in the farming community some years ago, I've heard tractor drivers boasting about the number of cars following them and the length of the que. But it's not the tractor drivers I'm complaining about, It's the idiot car drivers that refuse to overtake them that I'm complaining about. Even a 1.9 Zed can overtake a tractor when traffic allows.

I'll go against the flow here. First of all you should only drive as fast as the road conditions allow, within or on the speed limit. It's not always appropriate to drive at the speed limit. Well that's what my other half says and she is directly involved with road safety and I think generally I follow that thinking.

Over-taking is not for everyone. It's a very scary thought for some people coming head to head with another car. Some people are of a nervous disposition and will just never do it, some may be newly qualified and not be ready and others aren't even savvy enough to try possibly because they get up too close to have visibility.

The other thing is many cars just don't have the power to overtake even a tractor quickly and safely enough.

I only potter around in my Z3 at the weekend and I'm never in a hurry. If I get stuck behind a tractor in my main car I tend to try and stay patient in the certain knowledge it will turn into a field soon enough. Now steam vehicles, much that I love steam propulsion are another matter...

Tell that to the JCB Fastrac drivers around Gloucestershire legally doing 40mph with bloody big trailers behind them, :wideyed: which I don't mind TBH as they don't hold you up so much :D

Been there - got hit head on.

Most don't know how to overtake. Too close to the vehicle in front, too little speed, wrong gear, inability to judge speed of oncoming vehicles and distance needed to get past. I was taught to spend as little time on the opposite side of the road as possible - that needs skills that many are simply not taught any more.

Also I've known farm vehicle with long trailers and no lights just turn right as they are being overtaken.

I regularly see JCBs being driven huge distances because the operator won't pay for a low loader.

In the end if you're in a queue and people in front won't overtake you have to suck it up, turn up the radio, wind the window down and relax - otherwise you're becoming as much a risk as the donuts in front of you.

Anyone who hasn't got the confidence or the naus to overtake a tractor should not be on the road in my opinion, they are a danger to other road users. Once you have one vehicle behind a tractor it very soon becomes two then three and so on and that's when frustration starts to build, and that's when someone decides to take a chance.:(:(. Traffic police should be on the case of people who drive too slowly as well as those (rightly so) that drive too fast. . . . . . . . I'll get of my soap box now.:)

I see a lot of big new tractors going much faster than 25 mph these days, but yes , it's a pain to get stuck behind a long queue and it's common in summer in Lincolnshire because of caravans behind tractors. It is frustrating and causes some people to take dangerous risks. Better to keep calm - you're a long time dead!

Well now, that makes at least two of you that came across tractors while going to @t-tony 's place. I think all of you are just missing the obvious solution: @t-tony HAS GOT TO MOVE.....................................Frankie
