Think I need a new alternator. Current one charges fine but is making a "rubbing" noise, so think bearings are past it. A squirt of WD 40 silences it for a short time. 80K miles and 22 years of age seems good going for the original. Part number is 12311432977 for a 90 amp unit. Think Bosch is original. Lucas seems similar price.
Guess replacing bearings is not really viable these days, so any views on replacements please?

Personally I would go with a Bosch unit Ian.

The small independant rebuilders seem to be few and far between these days you may be lucky to find someone still operating to get yours rebuilt locally if you search them out. I couldn't find anyone when mine went duff to rebuild it. Got a remanufactured one from Mister Auto https://www.mister-auto.co.uk/alternator/bmw-z3-e36-1-9-118hp_v10228_g4.html
Mine was a Valeo on my 1.9 1999. They sent the wrong one so had to return it, second time they sent the right one.

When mine failed on my 2.2 last year I had a new one fitted as it was only about £40 more than a recon unit. It was a Bosch 130 amp IIRC.

Thanks for the offer @Mario, think I will get a new one, that should last me another 20 years!
