Alexa......

I'll give it a try at the father In-laws house. He has one and it drives me nuts. He must ask Alexa what time is it every 30 minutes or so and still wears his wristwatch:rage:

her answer

"the United Kingdom's political leader is Theresa May"

Aint that the truth, she will go down as the worst priminister that this country has ever had, total waste of space and a f***ing disgrace

I’m up quite early, but I will ask Alexa :p
I’ll ask google home mini too :)
Think it will make Alan laugh :)
I can’t ask now as everyone is asleep ;)

I’m somewhat amused by how others amuse themselves with Alexa and Siri.
Does anyone actually use them for real and productive tasks?
If so, what?

Ours switches any of my 4 sets of front room lights on also use her to turn the nest up/down as required and always use her to stream my amazon music either up or down stairs. Used her once to call @TaffZee

I ask her the time , and when I need a stopwatch on for 15 mins , but that’s about all :p

I use mine to switch on and off lights and TV / BT hub / Media amplifier, and play my Spotify playlists.
Ask it for the news as well sometimes.

Also use it regularly (well the wife does) to turn up and down the room temperature. (she shouts the orders at it, obviously because that format has worked with me before now)

And us blokes know women don't understand thermostatic control.... too hot turn it off.... too cold turn it on full, then too hot turn it off, then too cold turn it on full, .......... and repeat. :poke:
Ladies.... compare with TV volume, it does not need full, mute, full, mute, there is a setting in between that is perfectly suitable

Also I can open my double gates, open or close the garage door, and switch on or off the outside lights..

Does it understand what I say to my son? Turn the ****ing lights off! Close the ****ing windows. Don’t touch the ******* ******* thermostat again! =))

But, is it just making us lazy? Is it necessary or is it marketing hype?

I have outside lights that look after themselves. Just like the light in the fridge - on only when I need them.

With the heating set up and balanced correctly we rarely touch the thermostat. It’s timed and set up for our routine 95%+ of the time. Stats on all but one of the rads. One room stat for the coolest part of the house and the boiler shuts down on the by-pass rad return. Tinkering with the stat doesn’t change things much but simply uses more gas. It stays set and unchanged for months if not years at a time.

Now, intelligent heating with individual rad valves, outside and inside temp measurement, access to on-line weather forecast, self learning of the thermodynamics of the heating, building and people profiles, geofencing of your mobile so it can estimate when your going to be home - that would be positive use of technology. All you would need an app for is to override occasionally and reporting.

Besides - it would completely throw me if something did exactly as I asked. It never happens now =))

I have Tado, so mine does exactly all of that......

and then the missus arrives home.....

Haha. You told her where to change things. Error no 1.
A dummy stat or app is what you need =))

I have to admit that on occasions I've resorted to putting gaffer tape over the CH thermostat to stop meddling fingers....
