I swapped the seat bushes but did turn on the ignition stupidly to raise the roof to get the seat out. Is it an ABS reset tool on eBay? or is worth getting some software and an OBD cable in case of future tinkering???

I have almost exactly the same problem except I can clear the fault and put the airbag light out. All is ok when I am in the car on my own but as soon as I take a passenger the fault is back. Showing as code 24 which is seat belt pre- tensioner low resistance. All was fine until I fitted different seats. Does the little module under the passenger seat have to be coded to the car?

This is my biggest fear since I have the bushing job planned for one of my next weekends.
What's the correct procedure?

1. Seat all the way back, undo front bolts
2. Seat all the way to the front, undo the rear nuts
3. DISCONNECT BATTERY
4. (edit:)DO NOT Turn ignition ON while disconnected
5. Unplug stuff under the seat
6. Remove seat

This should be a light-free procedure, Is that right?

You don't need the ignition on at any point when the sests disconnected its what triggers the light.

Am I not supposed to do it to get rid of remainder of charge anywhere?

You could do that by pulling a light switch on. I have never disc the battery to swap my seats . Never caused me any issues.
Most get the car in a position to work on and then put the keys back in the house to stop any mistakes.
Its the initial turn of the key that puts the airbag system in to check mode so if it finds no seat pretentioners the light comes on. The tool to reset is cheap to be fair cheaper than paying a garage to put the light out once so i just brought one .

I have just spent the morning sorting out my airbag light. Since fitting the 2nd hand sports seats the airbag light has come on if I carry a passenger, I could clear it and drive the car solo but as soon as I carried a passenger the light came on. I was getting the same code 24 pointing to the seat belt pre- tensioner but if you actually disconnect the seat belt tensioner connector it throws up a different fault code so that was clearly not the problem. By undoing connectors one by one I narrowed it down to the seat occupancy pad in the seat base. Fortunately I have a spare one in my old seats which I have fitted and the fault is fixed.
Since a previous owner fitted a seat occupancy by pass module to your car I would suggest that you have the same fault and the easy cure is to fit another new by pass module. When you disturbed the seats it has somehow broken the old module. Hope this helps.

Can anyone help my airbag light is on I have a scanner and it came up code18 seat occupancy detector passenger I had my mechanic have a look he took the seat out wiring seemed ok although we had some rodent problems! Which must have been before me. Also the carpet behind the passenger seat had water underneath but I never take my car out in the rain and I've had it a year. The arial washer is split and the roof is not good. I wanted to drive to Spain next year but so much to do seat bushes, airbag, leaks, service, water pump! Anyone want to buy a 60k 2.8. Any thoughts will be much appreciated

You cannot check a seat occupancy pad by looking at it and saying that the wiring looks ok. Mine looked perfect but it was knackered. Either get a new pad and fix it properly or cheat by buying a little gizmo off eBay that plugs in under the seat and fools the car into believing there is a passenger in the car. Cheapest I have seen is about £7.
While you are on eBay get some plastic guides to fix the seat rocking problem for less than a tenner. Look on here for guides on how to do the jobs and crack on, you will soon gain the confidence to tackle the bigger jobs. Next year is a long way off so plenty of time.
Do not sell the car!! ( but if you do can I have first refusal) But do not sell the car!

Thanks Lazzzydog appreciate the tips I'll have a look on eBay for the gizmo thing that way I can make sure it is the pad if it is I'll replace it. Yep I have enjoyed the 350 miles I've done since I've owned the car not much for a year but I don't seem to get the time. Don't think I would sell but if I do I'll let you know. Thanks again.

Take a look at the Forthcoming Events and book a couple. It will make you use the car and you will make some really sound new friends, plus there will be people who have overcome any problem you are likely to have with your Z and are only too happy to explain how they did it.

Hi Andy
Did mine a couple of weeks ago and followed the instructions exactly and had no problems, all I would say its a bit easier with two of you, one holding the seat at various times. The seats move without ignition on (if I remember right) Geoff

What @lazzydog says!

I started with the Z3 never having done any car mechanics at all. Since june, I've ended up changing the suspension (with help from the #zedshed for the front ones) and countless other jobs.

Just the antenna rubber is about £12 and 10 minutes jobs. It's also very satisfying to do stuff yourself! These cars are 'known' and with just a bit of patience, a good set of tools and the help of the forum, you can tackle a hell of a lot of things yourself!

Please can I borrow a scanner/reset tool I turned on the ignition to open the roof. Made it much easier to get the seat out.

I’ve done the aerial on mine. What year is yours? I got sent the wrong on (pre2000) first so have it spare somewhere. For it, you need to loosen the hydraulic pump for the roof and a couple of nuts. Try to lube it up first so it pops off. Same with putting the new one on.

If you can get down the M6 to Shropshire, 12 miles off Jct 16 I will reset your airbag light for you but there may be somebody nearer.
