Air filter change

Hi, I'm new here so sorry if this has been posted before.

I'm taking my Z3 2002 1.9 Sport roadsters in for an MOT in the coming week and while it is there I'm going to have BMW service it. I'm planning on only getting the inspection 1 type service (whist is £238 hope that includes the VAT ). Much as I'd love to also get the air filter service as well it is just way too much money (over £400 though I think this also includes spark plugs). My question is... I'm assuming (hopefully correctly) that changing the air filter is pretty simple and something I can do myself. If that is the case does anyone have any tips about ensuring I use a genuine filter, also what to watch out for and where I could go wrong? Thank you in advance for any help

Oh and not sure if it makes a difference but the car has done just over 16k miles

Where are you located as I'm sure someone local to you could change the air filter and the plugs for you, or show you how to do it, a 15 minute job.

OMG the most expensive is under £8 and that looks fairly easy to fit. Thank you Jonco: )

You pay a hell of a premium for a BMW stamp in your service book, but as the mileage is so low on your car (which is probably in mint condition) it may be worth keeping it up?
If you click on the members tab at the top of the page, then on "user map" you can click on + and swipe the map until you see West Yorks. and it's members location by the BMW logo. Click on the logo and it tells you who lives there.

Thank you Tony. Yes the car is pretty much mint. I haven't kept the yearly oil service up as between services I wasn't really doing enough miles to warrant the prices. Main reason it is being done this time is when I checked the oil the other day I thought it looked like a change was due - forgot how much it would cost for the privilege lol

Changed mine recently, easy job just two spring clips which flick off and then you can lift off the air filter top cover enough to get the new element in. I bought a Pipercross one off ebay promised better performance and mpg but cannot say I noticed any difference , it was pricey approx £35.

Thank you Peter, once it has had its MOT and Oil service, I am going to change it along with the spark plugs - when I figure out what type it takes lol

My 1.9 has 4 spring clips, one on each side of the filter box.........have you lost 2 ?

I was just going from memory it may have four although I did not take it right off

If you look on NGK- Europe website - you can enter your model and get recommended plug. You can upgrade to Iridium, which are more expensive, but with the mileage you are doing it may not be worth it.

Thank you, it tells me it is an M44 B19 / E36/7 engine so I can get this sorted at the same time. I'll have a look for the size plug spanner I need to fit those - I really am that new to fiddling with my car

Look in your tool kit in the boot - there should be one in there if you've had car from new.
