I washed the car this morning….. ( someone revive @andyglym =)) ). And I noticed the aerial was leaning back further than normal…..

So investigated……. The plastic dome has been snapped.:banghead::banghead::banghead: And the core wire has also been broken.

I have a feeling that this could be another car park ‘ incident’. Have had the Kia hit twice in carparks in the last 6 months …..( all repairs done now at my expense🤬🤬🤬)

I cant see how it could break under normal conditions… but anyway….. nothing I can do about it other than to get it repaired

The large nut will undo, so you can get to the wire…

so to repair it needs a new piece of coiled wire added to the existing wire…then screw the nut back on , solder the wire to the top piece, then superglue ( gorilla glue) the dome back in place.

( the coiled wire will make it easier to push the plastic back together…. Well… thats the theory

So thats the plan….. but need to get some glue so will try this tomorrow.

But its always good to have a back up plan……. =))
Mine is ……… @spurs fan in a coupe
……… Andy have you got one ?????? The part number is 65218375159

and as a temporary repair…. Stuck a bit of butyl in the grommet to save any leaks…..

Sorry to see that. ☹️
Is the broken wire co-ax? Ridiculously thin inner with an outer shield? If so your repair becomes more difficult and the repair wire coil may not be enough. Hopefully it’s not.

single core

A good tip here is to drill a 2mm hole right through the remaining solder/ wire in the broken part and then you can feed the new wire into the hole and solder in place.

That's a bugger mate  Good effort washing your Zed though ;)

Some one nicked my ariel a couple of years ago. Rather than unscrew it they broke it off; result much like yours. Andy provided me with a replacement at reasonable cost. :(

Got on with the repair this morning having found some araldite rapid ….

Extended the wire. cut it as low as possible to give a bit more flexibility. Soldered and sleeved. Screwed the plastic piece on then twisted the wire so created a small coil inside the plastic. Pull it out to open the coils and cut, stripped and tinned the end of the wire.

Good tip about drilling a 2mm hole ,

pushed the tinned wire into the hole and got a soldering iron on it …it was a bit tight on space and took a bit of heat but the plastic dome survived it;)….

Mixed up the araldite and used a cocktail stick to get it right into the joint… just glued everything  And pushed the two bits together. wiped off the glue that squirted out and held it in place ( the weight of a g clamp pushing it against the wall )

Set in 5 minutes but left it for about 30mins.
cleaned round the joint with a needle file just to remove any sharp points , then a bit of fairy liquid ( no expense spared…=)))… pushed it back into the grommet on the car … a couple of connections and a couple of nuts and fixings and all back together …. and works !!!
The only thing is, I will have to retune the radio stations in as they were cleared

The only other thing was to put some copper grease on the thread before putting the aerial back on.
