Hi guys,

I've got a 2.0l 6 cylinder Z and I've been looking for ways of increasing power. After a quick look around at replacement engines (specifically the S54) I've also been looking at alternatives.

Has anyone successfully performed a displacement increase on a 6 cylinder engine? Either boring out or longer throw lower end?

(Supercharger and new exhaust system already on my wishlist, have already got a conical filter)

An engine swap would be probably more cost effective and quicker, and you can pick up 2.8's relatively cheap. The S50/54 engines aren't cheap!

I don't think the M52 2.0 is the best starting point for stripping down/rebuilding/modifying. Not so many parts about for them, unlike the 2.8's.

Thanks, Gaz, I'll have a look out for those. I'm also tempted to have a trip to the local scrapyard to see if they have anything.

Any recommendations for a possible 6 speed box? I like the idea of a 6 speed box :D

Depends what scrappy you go to and what they have... A later 3 series (E46?) would have a 6 speed gear box so you could by as a set perhaps? As to whether whatever you buy will fit is down to your mechanical ability... ;)

Give me enough time and I can make anything fit... it just might not stay there very long.

Engineering FTW :D:D:D

I would from a cost point of view think a 2.8 would be the easiest option. Not great with the spanners but I assume the mounting points etc will be the same?

Hi

The mechanics of the engine swap is the easy bit. The M52BXX and M54BXX fit. The 6 speed gear box fits with custom shifter rods and drive shaft. The electrickery of the engine computer (DME) change or programming is the usual stumping point.

The M52TUB20 that you have in your car has the MS42.1 DME. This gives you several options:

1) Replace with a larger sized dual VANOS M52TUXX engine up to 2.8 L and swap over the the engine and its DME. Only minor reprogramming needed for EWS alignment and transmission types etc. Alternatively re-program your DME with the 2.8 L fuel tables etc.

2) Install a M54BXX engine up to 3.0 L and connect it as a M52TUXX engine electrically e.g. swap over your M52TUB20 sensors, keep your DME and do lots of program changes to get the fuel tables right. You will need to do a wire by wire comparison between the two vehicles first so that you know what work-arounds will be needed.

3) Upgrade your car to the MS43.0 DME used by the M54BXX engines and install a 3.0L engine. Check out the link below, it appears that the differences are not too great.

Hope this helps
