Guys

Our 1997 Z3 has working central locking off the key. Is there an easy way to add remote locking to it?
Was wondering about one of those aftermarket kits but would need to know how to wire it in.
All advice appreciated.

Cheers

My 1997 Z3 has remote locking, as standard I think. Are you just needing a fob?

Are you saying the remote buttons on your key are not working, you havn't made it clear in your post. If the buttons don't work it may be down to a flat battery in the key or the key has not been synced to the locking system. The keys contain two systems one is the transponder chip that is coded to the cars EWS module that allows the car to start, the secondary system is a small pcb that operates the central locking functions, its this part that needs the battery. The transponder chip requires no power it is simply read by a ring aerial around the ignition barrel when the key is inserted which picks up the code and if it matches what the EWS module is expecting it will allow the car to start by releasing the starter motor.
How many keys do you have for the car are all not functioning?

If you have the BMW fitted alarm then there is a keyfob you can get from eBay which will allow you to have remote central locking and activate the alarm. I used posts from this forum and it works a treat. Haven't got the links to the post but do some searching on fobs and central locking and you shoudl find the ebay link for a fob and the instructions on how to sync it.

If it is a 97 car you probably need a separate alarm fob then code it to the car?

To clarify, the keys are both torch keys-no buttons. The car does have a disconnected BMW alarm with no remotes, but whether it is connected to the locking, I have no idea.
In the past with other cars I have connected one of the cheap chinese remote kits which is what I was thinking, if I know where to tap into the wiring.

The BMW remote works the alarm and central locking. As above, you might just need a "brick", they do seem to get lost. If so, it will need syncing to the car.
