No it's not nuts just driving me nuts , have abs and traction control lights on , so sent for a Foxwell nt530 scanner at £121 from Foxwell.co.uk arrived in 4 days , plugged into connection under the bonnet and it found my car in a few minutes including the build year , did an auto scan and no faults found then set to manual scan and it seems to read all modules except the chassis modules where the abs is , it comes up with no communication check connections , ignition on , is battery charger , I'm struggling to pinpoint the issue with this and any help would be greatly appreciated , checked the fuses in fuse box all seem ok

I found if you do a manual scan it brings up more info. Should read all systems including chassis though. I presume it is registered?
Yes registered it before using , used on manual and yes does bring up more info , just no communication on chassis abs , thinking there is another problem

What system do you have? ASC? DSC? try doing manual scan for an E36 or an e46

Hi

So you can't communicate with the EGS or the ABS modules. I take it that your car is an automatic and thus has an EGS?

Is it the Scanner Language?
Your build date of 11/98 should have you squarely in the OBD2 world for all modules in the car. The change over from ADS to OBD2 was 03/98. But just in case there was some carry over, could you please scan the EGS and ABS with ADS. This is done by manually selecting the E36 section. Answering "Yes" to the question about if your car is older than 03/98, then manually selecting the modules to scan.

Is it the Scanner?
Is there anyone near you with INPA or an alternative good scanner with BMW software that could scan your car and see if it can read the EGS and ABS modules?

Is it the module?
Have a look at Drawing 0670.5-01 in the wiring diagram pack for your Z3's build date. It shows the topography of the diagnostic connections.

The EGS is connected in series with the DME. If needed, you can pull pin 6 on connector X60002 at the DME and jumper it to the pulled pin 32 on connector X60004 to by pass the DME. If that does not work, its the module. I would have expected to see the Transmission error light up (cog of death) if the EGS is faulty.

The ABS is in a star topography. As you can read all the other modules in the star, I would suspect the ABS module is faulty. You could try a jumper from pin 20 on the diagnostic port to pin 7 on the ABS connector to prove that the problem is not faulty wiring.

If in the end you need to change the ABS module with a replacement one. The replacement module will need to be coded to the car. The software tools to do the coding come with a INPA software package. You'll either need to borrow a work INPA setup or set up the software yourself on a laptop.

Hope this help

Regards

Murray

Bampz, you need to buy Murray a one-way plane ticket.
England is a nice place to live,
In the current COVID world, New Zealand is a rather nice place to be at the moment.

I wondered if you car actually had an EGS, as most Z3 in the UK are manuals. So its just the ABS that is causing the problem.

Below is the wiring diagram. The data link to the ABS is WS/VI or white with a violet strip.

I know you bought the scanner already but if end up sending it back, my Autel ML629 read and cleared airbag and ABS codes. I cleared code 71 last night. If you do end up getting that code, the soldering is pretty easy to fix with the guide on here.

If it helps, my scanner asked to be connected to the 20 pin socket and also wanted confirmation my car wasn't pre 1998 before doing anything. It came up with two ABS options in the chassis menu but both showed the same code.

In the left pic is the engine EWS module.

Three relays: left, pale green is a regular unloader relay, not sure what for. The tall brown one is the crash relay. I think the yellow one is for the air con compressor.

Behind glovebox: Body control module (biggest one with three connectors), one for the wash/wipe (blue connector iirc) and the lower right one could be the hood module (power hood).

E36's have either a separate ABS control unit fitting in above the body control module inside the car, or is built into the ABS block under the bonnet. ASC types are the latter.
