Aberfan da,

I was 11 and remember it well. The haunting images on a black and white TV made it all the more horrific. Pleased you managed to have some fun on the way home though Hugh.

Indeed. Many would argue that it's the UK's worst disaster. 116 children that would be parents and grandparents by now and 28 teachers some of which would still be with us today. An impact on a small community that will be remembered daily until living memory has passed. visited some years ago when in Wales, very sad I deed. :(

I remember this as well , I was 12 years old and following it on the tv with my parents. very sad very avoidable accident :(

heres the ponsticill to merthyr steam train i could not have timed this better.. i ran up the banking as heard it coming and got about 3 shots of it coming past.. this is inbetween the two reservoirs at pontsticill.... if you ever get chance to get ther...

That's my kinda of photos.

I remember Aberfan and have travelled through the town only once but never got chance to pay my respect.

I was six and remember it happening and worrying as a child that the hill would come down on our school. On a lighter note in the retail park we bumped into Mrs @zedwheels as we walked into the tea shop she was loaded with bags and an empty wallet ;). And the drive home lightened the mood as it always does when your driving your favourite car in such inspiring countryside
Who was driving whose car Miller

It has been documented on here Sarah, the 2.8 is your car, Hugh has to put up with the ///M.;)

Tony.

Well guys I'm back from A&E ,they safely managed to remove the kitchen utensil without laughing to much. The ambulance guys said they'd never seen so much blood from a "little p*****"?its still painful to walk and sit down,I've got one of these inflatable plastic rings but it makes a farting sound every time I move around.Hovever Sarah is very subdued and has even made me some soup..and a sandwich...which was what I'd asked for in the first place!?

Hope you get better soon @miller1098 :p

How very sad , I sorry to say I haven't heard about this :(
I'm too young ........ I'm going to have a read about it on the Internet
It's awful, .......

I remember the tragedy well, at the time I was working on the Aberthaw power station near St. Athan's when the message came through to site asking for men to board the work busses with their shovels to be taken to Aberfan. I can remember how quickly all the available busses
filled up!
Yes Hugh Linda said she spotted you out "shopping" and yes she came home with an empty purse! Again!!!:ymdevil:

It was a typical Autumn day and this morning we decided to take a day.I don't know if you know the tragedy of the Aberfan disaster but it was the 50 years anniversary this October .The accident happened when a coal tip that had been waterlogged by a stream plunged down the side of the mountain and engulfed the school killing 116 children and 28 adults that had just started their school day.The NCB had many warnings over years about the problem but ignored them, and then stole charity money to clean up the mess. Its part of our recent Welsh history and is remembered every year.We went today to give our respects.Ive been to war graves in France and it's moving but what hits you as soon as you slowly pass the first few memorials are the ages of the innocent children all cruelly taken at that fateful moment, brothers, sisters even a mother and her two daughters the teachers who tried to protect their pupils.its tough but worth it . Needless to say after a cuppa we took the scenic route home View attachment 44493View attachment 44494View attachment 44495View attachment 44496View attachment 44497View attachment 44498View attachment 44499View attachment 44500
