Yep, drove all of them Pete, proper driver's cars they were. My old boss was the dealer principal at the Alfa Romeo dealership in Lincoln and he had the best ones, like an AlfaSud Sprint Clover Leaf, that thing cornered like it was on rails. Amongst others an Alfa GTV (veloce). I even had a Strada (Ritmo) for the work van when I had my garage in Gainsborough when an old customer gave up driving and left the car with me to have. We called it Kermit, because it was pale Met. Green. My mate Paul had an Uno Turbo, Jeez that thing was bloody quick. P155 poor brakes but went like S**t off a stick.

this was the colour of the mirafiori I had....

7262192DSCI0190.jpg
It had twin overhead camshaft engine, when all my mates had Mk 4 cortinas. It would run rings around them
There was an advert at the time with the F1 music as they changed the cortina into one.

found it on t'tube

I loved that car.

although I really like the Abarth Spider,......... in those two photos the Z3 I think looks sleeker, classier and actually more expensive.
The Abarth looks a bit, dare I say, 'Halfords"

The white version, I think, carries off the black bonnet and red trim better.

I think the black version carries off the black bonnet and red trim better. Still not sure about the red trim though.

It looks quite a nice car but I would want to wait and see how well they last before having one. Back in the eighties I had a Lancia Delta turbo and had to change the rear crossmenber before it was 4 years old sue to rust. Bought and E30 325 after that which was still going strong 20 years later.

In the past I've had 2 1.5 alfasuds a 131 supermirafiori sport black with orange trim a 132 and a Monte Carlo all of which suffered severe rust. They were all great cars but Italian cars of that era simply rusted away. With the new fiat 124 I know you shouldn't have too but it could always be dinitroled or similar when almost new as rust proofing has improved so much.

German engineering and build quality versus Italian electrics, tough choice
I don't totally agree with that. The CLK I had wasn't one of the worst MB's but my brother had the 1st Gen CLK 320 conv. He sadly had to give it up due to rust. It is the worst car I have ever seen for grot. I had one rear wheel arch repaired on my CLK 240 when I bought it. 19 months later it was starting again.

I have had three Alfas and three Ferraris. Bodywork rot has never been an issue on any. However I had an Alfa 159 quite recently and it was quite corroded on the front subframe. This is a common issue with the 159, Brera and the Spider. Less so on the latter because they are now being looked after. I may well swap the Z3 for a 939 (Brera) Spider. next year or the year after
I had a 1997 Alfa Spider twin spark, bought in 2011 and sold last year. That was in very good condition underneath though I never checked under the plastic lower sills. The TS is one of the best sounding 4-pots I have ever driven.
Also had an Alfa GT. The only issue with that was EGR valve and suspension components. Alfas of recent (can't speak for the Giulia) do wear through suspension parts at an alarming rate.
I own a brand new CLA200 as my daily and I was considering a Giulia but they are a tad expensive compared with my MB. Love my CLA though.

I also looked at one 2 litre six Z3 before I bought my 1.9. That did sound nice but even though it was a trader selling it, it was undrivable. leaky roof, discs were covered in thick rust (would need all new brakes) and was a general shed. The wheel arch and sills were terribly rusty. It obviously had not been looked after.

My first Ferrari a 1983 Mondial QV 2004 - 2010 was 21 when I bought it. The fuse box was dreadful and badly designed and as such truly let the reliability down.
Also had a 1997 F355 2010 - 2015. Mixed feelings as it was one of my 'affordable' dream cars. Mostly it was OK but regularly failed on emissions. I spent a fair wedge getting it through emissions the last three out of five years I had it. Major cambelt services have the potential to be expensive and the one I had was an eye watering £3600. Purely on the grounds that when you remove the engine you disturb stuff and find things sooner and since the engine is out you pay for it :D. The emissions problem was a faulty sensor (not related to emissions but shorting) on the same circuit. Other than that the electrics and body work were perfect. My 2001 360 put the 2004 CLK to shame for build quality and condition. Ferraris do however tend to be looked after and early noughties MB's were very poorly made.

I currently still have the 360 and have had since September 2015. That (touching wood) has been perfect. Just about to do the second belt service since I have owned it.

So my view on Italian cars is that they are as good as the next. Thinking our German cars a better is a little bit of a myth today. I say this generally as I believe there is not as much in it now as once was.
Last and not least, having owned an Audi A4 & B5.5 Passat (both petrol) they both leaked inside like no convertible I have ever owned (ex wife had a 1998 MX5 from new for 12 years) the 2002 VW was probably the most unreliable sheite I have had the misfortune to own and it came from a main dealer. It was just over three when I bought it. I swapped that for a 2003 216 Rover. The Rover was a far better car :p

As for the Abarth 124; I think it looks and more importantly sounds wonderful. Very Italian and I like that. I would struggle to choose between that and the MX5 though. I think the exhaust note might win me over on the 124.

Great post Malc, it's good to hear peoples experiences of cars, whether good or bad.

I thought I'd discounted the Abarth but I've found myself still looking at them.

I think it's the exhaust note that's winning me over, and the rarity over the MX-5

One MX-5 caught my eye though, the Recaro Edition.

Recaro seats, Bilstein suspension, limited slip diff.

But the Italian, retro, look of the Abarth keeps drawing me back.

Good to hear the 360 isn't breaking your bank, love those.

And just to add, my recent experience of VW/Audi has been very poor.

After going round in circles trying to decide what to get I picked up a Spider today.

I was close to getting a 370z Nismo, or a Z4m.

Although the spider was th3 slowest of the lot it certainly puts a smile on your face, it really does make a nice noise.

I'll report back in a few weeks with an update as I'm off away for a few weeks and won't be driving it.

Thankyou,

Yes, it's the Abarth model.

The ones with the black bonnet/boot have the heritage pack. It's a vinyl sticker for the bonnet and nose, but a black panel for the bootlid.

One car I was considering had a scratch on the nosecone. A call to the parts dept revealed that it wasn't a part you could order, they suggested going to a wrapping specialist. So that ruled it out for me.

I just have to decide on the red mirrors and trims now, I guess they suit it, but black mirror caps aren't expensive which is good.

It's a nice "back to basics" car.

1060kg, limited slip diff, brembo brakes, bilstein suspension.

Do you known that it's a Mazda mx5, as Mazda and Fiat are working together.
I had to take my wife's Fiat 500x for service and had a great look at one.
And the salesman gave me a great sales chat on motor
Being 6ft 3 found it hard getting out of one.
But it's a good looking little sport car.

Hi Harold, yes, based on the MX-5 but a little fiat/Abarth sprinkled on it.

I just hope it wont corrode away like MX-5's are known to.

I'm planning to strip out the wheel arch liners and get some wax in there, being careful not to cover any drains etc... And my "toy" cars don't go out in winter weather.

It feels very different to an MX-5 as this has a small turbo engine. Lots of power comes in at just over 2,000 revs.

It's not rewarding to rev to the limiter like the Mx-5 though.

I saw one in the showroom like yourself, but initially they were far too expensive at over £30,000 list.

Now at sub 20k they're better value.

I fit in nicely as I'm only 5' 5" but I can imagine anyone tall would not be comfortable, they are rather snug inside.

I'll report back some more once I've had it a while, but after a 140 mile drive home I'm very happy with it so far.

Tim
