As you know last Saturday me and 7 members were having a great day here at the Zedshed blissfully ignorant of what had happened earlier that same day only 10 miles away. A young mum and daughter perished in a house fire, tragically her young son passed away the next day and her husband remains critically ill in hospital.
Now I know there's nothing we could have done but I have a twinge of guilt for having fun while this was unfolding.

There's a chance it may have been started by Christmas lights on a dried out tree, time will tell. So PLEASE be careful with your lights and trimmings this and every Christmas, and think of the family of these people.

Very sad for all concerned mate, as you say, tragic.

I posted this ladt year, if you do have a real Xmas tree, keep it watered to reduce the chances of fire. Check your lights and never leave then on at night or when you go out. Unplug.

Unfortunately these things are a stark reminder that even at this festive time of year tragedy can be just around the corner such a shame .
 
A really sad and upsetting event Tony. It shows that places we consider to be safest can pose all kinds of threats.

It is important that families have an agreed escape plan in case the worst happens. Homes are typically far more secure and glazed with glass designed not to break. They are as hard to get out of as they are to get into.

Despite the tragedy, life has to go on. You can’t get upset yourself because you were unknowingly having a good day at the time. I’m sure many of us have had similar experiences where we’ve been on the right side of tragic events. Not going to put it on here but many years ago I was literally feet away from a similarly awful event and didn’t know it until afterwards.

All we can do is learn and hope such an awful tragedy never befalls us or those close to us.
 
Saw this sad story on the local news yesterday Tony :(.
I feel for the relatives left behind, especially at this time of year where kids are involved.
 
Absolutely Ian, it was just a melancholy moment when you "over think" something mate.

ps. On WFTV.com in Florida they have just shown a video of a dried out tree going up in flames with lights draped over it.

I saw it watching the evening news on Saturday Steve, it fair took the wind out of my sails mate after the day we'd had.:(

I can imagine it did, being so local to you.
You shouldn't feel guilty for enjoying yourself, even if we'd know at the time, I doubt there's anything we could of done unfortunately.
 
Sad to see incidents like this still happening and appreciate how you feel near your door step Tony when having a fun time. Wifey has got in another live tree this year but at least LED lights have been used on it or better as I don’t like it with the older fashioned lights with the greater heat output, can be easily to neglect the turn off at times

Yes, read about this on Sunday. Very sad. Even if we were next door there's probably not much we could have done. A neibour did try but failed:(

Only use LEDs now.
 
Awful Tony but nothing to feel bad about mate. We were doing what we do blissfully unawares of what was happening down the road.
Things happen in the blink of an eye.
I was 10 seconds behind an accident this morning in the M40. A Toyota landcrusier ran over a motorbike at speed. The motorcysylist was flat out not moving in lane 3. I doubt for a second he made it.

Hate to point it out, but while LEDs operate at a lower temperature (and so have a lower risk of providing heat into a fuel/oxygen mix), you have a transformer and power supply to create the lower voltage needed. Many of these are incredibly cheap nasty power units bought in from China etc. They don't have the kind of circuit and thermal protection they should have. They are equally likely to burst in to flames - just short the output with a damaged cable to find out.
Please - Don't create yourself a false sense of security because you are using LEDs.

Ours are battery Ian, we have probably 10 sets currently around the house, two on the tree, the batteries will last the holiday season as well.

Lithium batteries have a habit of catching fire, especially if deformed or packaging breeched.
9V alkali batteries too are dangerous - the terminals which are close together and are easily shorted. They can provide a lot of energy in a short period of time.

People see these little devices as safe. Relatively, then yes they are, but not 100% safe, especially if abused.

Horrible to hear about Dave. Don't see any major delays resulting from closures that normally result from that kind of incident. Hopefully it wasn't as bad as you fear.

Ian, there is possibility everywhere of danger from some degree of failure or misuse, but lets keep things realistic mate, the risk can be minimised to an acceptable level. I'll take my chances with battery powered LEDs. Lets not get into the realms of scare mongering eh? :rolleyes:
