A THOUGHT TO PONDER.......WHAT'S YOUR OPINION?

I recently replied to the thread "NEWBIE PETE". I'm certainly glad to welcome a new member to our fold. In his opening post, @PeteZ3 said: "this is my first car, im 20". This got me thinking back to my first car which was an Alfa Romeo 1964 Spyder Veloce. I had learned to drive using my parents cars, but this was MY first car. It was quite a thrill and quite a car. Reading @PeteZ3 's remark about it being his FIRST car the thought occurred to me that I couldn't quite resolve. Perhaps some of the members can elucidate this idea. It is this: Is it better for a new driver to have a Z3 for his (or her) first car, or own other cars first? Can anyone fully appreciate the beauty of owning such a fine machine without the knowledge of less superior cars? Had I not owned the Alfa, I might never have appreciated the beauty and joy of owning and driving such a fine machine. But the knowledge of just HOW good it was, only developed from driving other cars that did not live up to the same standard. My gut reaction was that one should drive a Z as soon as possible and that should they, for some reason, lose the use of the Z, they have something to aim for in trying to acquire another. If that is no longer possible, at least they have had the Z experience. What are your feelings on this?...............Frankie

I always say "get the best that you can afford" and that goes for everything from chocolate bars to cars.

I don't think there is a need to suffer "bad things" before you are able to savour "good things"

My first car was an 1968 Vauxhall Viva HB 1.6SL. I got it in 1975 so it was only 7yrs old and it was a wreck, lol. It didn't have 2 panels that were the same colour, but I loved it and it got me through my driving test

My first car cost £300 which was all the money I had in the world. Twas a MK2 Escort 1.1 pop plus. Absolute pile of s**** lol!!!!!

Well to be honest I'm a tad envious in the nicest possible way. On the same page as @ Jack Ratt get the best you can because it's not a rehearsal and it doesn't last long. My first car was a 1983 MK 3 Ford Escort 1.3. Great little car but a tad basic (think the seats and steering wheel were optional extras). Bit scary on the Autobahn with Mercs, Bimmers and Porkers sucking your headlights out on the way past!

Why go stearage when you can go first class if you have the opportunity? I do think @pete Z3 should take one for the team though and drive a Vauhall Nova 1.0 once a week just to feel the pain

I personally don't think you can appreciate the good things in life until your had the not so good things first
Younger people now a days seam to get a lot more things than I did when I was younger and that goes for everything not just cars .....
Look what the average child gets for a birthday or Christmas presents

My first car was a Mini, TVL 9, wish I still had that one. It cost the princely sum of £50, the same amount dad spent on my eldest brothers Steve's first car, an Anglia XFW 444 white with blue flash and my next elder brother Martin's first car a Ford Mk1 Cortina GT, 8910 VT, minus the 1500 lump had a 1200 instead, in Monaco Red. Sister Dawn had. £50 singer sewing machine, no car. Those were the days, and boy do I appreciate my Z3.

Agreed @Shelly. My kids mock me when I try to explain to them about marbles and building your own go-carts! Real entertainment as apposed to being a "U-Tuber". And they laugh like hyena's when I tell them we only had 3 TV channels and it wasn't 24/7

Being that I got suspended before I had a full drivers my first car came a tad later than most. A 53 ford bought with money borrowed from a neighbour at 40$ CDN or at today's rates £20. V8 flattie top speed 95mph. After that it's a blur of many different brands of cars trucks and motorcycles. Took the granddaughter to get me into the ZED now TOO!! JIM

A good point Frankie. There is one outcome though. Now he has had one and he does eventually change it for a different car then he will either get another one or upgrade to the Z4

The Talbot Samba was a fine car, . . . . . .ok it was a piece of crap but I used to work on them. Just a Peugeot 104 with a different skin.

My first car was a Mk3 Cortina, passed my test whilst serving at RAF Gutersloh in Germany, drove back home on leave to Anglesey North Wales the day after I passed my test. Learnt a lot about driving on that trip.

No way! When were you at Gutersloh? I was there 86-90. The C-in-C also passed her test at Gutersloh. Long old drive down the Route 2.

79-81. Loved it. Posted back early for my fitters course. But was back out at 431MU mid 84. Happy days.
