A progression thread.

Agreed. Temp gap too big anyway. The thermostat housing you need must have the “step” to allow the new thermostat and rubber seal to seat. The housing you were supplied is the wrong one for your engine/cylinder head.

Tony.

But all the parts I have are sold in the z3 fan delete mod kit so they know they must not fit

So the separate thermostat should sit in the block like this. My engine doesn’t have that step so am I limited to only being able to use the combined housing and thermostat

If the stat and seal fits into the housing like in figure 6 it would be ok. Either the housing OR the face of the block/Cyl.head has to be flat.

Tony.

Post a picture of,
1. The new thermostat housing.
2. The face of the engine where it fits.
3. The thermostat and gasket.
4. The old thermostat housing.

can you see why I’m losing the plot slightly… it’s costing me a small fortune!!

Why 3 stats? How do they fit together? Is this a 1.9 4 cyl. Engine?

two types of thermostat housings and thermostats for the 2.8.
probably a technical update on later engines?
Check these diagrams and see what is yours.
i bet they sent you the wrong part. I may be wrong. I am not an expert.

Sorry I gave you hardly any info did I. It’s a 2.8 6 cylinder 1999 pre facelift wide body

The 2 thermostats that are combined are both new the only difference is one is ally the other plastic
They both fit fine and have a opening temp of 88

Cant help more. I guess the instructions you follow refer to 1
It’s the fact you have to use diagram 1 as you can’t get a thermostat/housing combined unit that opens at 80 degrees instead of 89

Can you not swap one thermostat into the other housing? Which is the original from the car? Does it have hoses with jubilee clips or spring clips?

Tony.

I’m not sure my mechanical capability’s stretch to being able to swap them over. I bought brand new hoses and jubilee clips as the originals with the spring clips had a slight leak

without a milling machine I don’t think there’s any chance of swapping the thermostats over

If you do that you will have a hose with a jubilee at one end and a spring clip at the other. So the other end will have a jubilee clip on a hose pushed onto a smooth stub. This will go from bad to worse, possibly even blowing the hose off that smooth stub even pressure builds in the system.

The housing in this pictures should bolt onto a flush face with no step, sealed by that "O"ring. Why can't you use this, because the stat's is too low temp?

Tony.

I’m just going to have to call it a day with the fan delete and revert back to buying new old style hoses with the spring clips and replacing the viscous fan clutch. A valuable lesson learned I think. Don’t keep throwing money at something without fully doing your research!!! :sour:

I just popped down to the workshop and tried a little experiment!

I just don’t trust them… I can’t physically pull them off but under heat and pressure I just wouldn’t trust them to stay on.
