Hi guys,

I'm new here, but I have always come here for advice and help with my Zed, it was advice from here that helped me replace my rear windscreen, fix my air intake and idler, and also enable me to get the roof down despite that I think the motor might be in need of being replaced. But I have a couple of issues that I can't find a clear answer for, I've searched but there's nothing definite over it.

I have 2.0l UK spec Z3, it's 16 years old now with 91k miles on the clock. I will introduce her and post piccies when I next get some. I know that she's been sat wet (leaking roof) for a while, I have fixed this now but I'm seeing silly little problems that I'm sure are related to this.

Anyway, today's issues are;

1. Rough running when cold. Simply put before the engine warms up it runs incredibly rich, pouring petrol straight out of the exhaust and popping regularly. I have replaced all of the air intake now so I seriously doubt this the problem, plus the fact that it calms down after 30seconds to a minute of running suggests that's not the issue too (although happy to be proven wrong for a couple of quids worth of rubber hose haha). I have been told that it might be the VANOS, but the guy who told me this has to be right about everything, even when he doesn't know what he's talking about so I'm not convinced by him.

2. It appears that the water pump has blown a seal, it is dumping coolant all over the front of the engine bay. I have read some horror stories about impeller blades embeded in plastics, and this has not happened, the pump itself appears to be still be working beyond pouring the water down the V belts. Has this happened to others and should I just change the seal (if possible) or just replace the pump? (I don't want the hellish sounding explosions that some people have described to happen to me). Is the pump easy to remove?

Thanks very much in advance guys.

Thanks 5harp3y, I will see if I can get hold of that. The metal impeller is more reliable, I take it?

:welcome: to the forum from West Cumbria. The metal impeller water pump is deemed to be the better bet and lasts longer and is less prone to failure I'm informed. There are a number of mechanical types who will be along shortly to assist in your issues (sorry, polishing is my limit). Where are you based as somebody may be able to help? Good luck.

Thanks Andy, I'll definitely try and get hold of a metal impeller water pump then, I definitely plan on seeing the next few years with her.

I'm based in Alton, Hampshire. I am curious whether the other local Zeds are on here. I guess after I introduce myself I'll have a better idea, haha. At work at the moment so it will have to wait.

Although the metal impeller is better the last two I have bought have been a new plastic type. When you compare it to the old one the Impeller has been mounted differently. So don't panic if you cant find a metal one.

@Adydurn I have a reader and only down the road from you feel free to make use one evening this week.

Hi Lee,

Sorry for the late reply, the gf is off on exercise so every evening last week was important to us.
Thanks so much for the offer, I'd love to take you up on that, if it still stands?

Pump changed, the bearing was in bits on the old pump, very surprised at how easy it was to change once I had the fan out (I removed the radiator while I was at it). The new one has a metal impeller, just a cheap £20 job from the local automotive outlet.
