What means "cat d" ?
It's been in an accident and had an insurance claim against it. The damage has generally been enough to write the car off, and the insurance company has allowed the owner to buy the car back after the claim is settled. Cat D is generally light cosmetic damage.
Possibly a Japanese import? Japan is a right hand drive country. (but most BMWs there are LHD as they have a "thing" about LHD European cars, but still some are RHD)
On a car the age of a Z3, even an M, a Cat C or a Cat D is more often than not light external panel damage.
Cat D tends to be even lighter as it means the cost of the repair itself was economical but once the insurance company took into account other overheads and sneakily the worth of the car when they send it to salvage auction it was cheaper for them to write it off. This serves as a terrible injustice to many good old cars as even in a pristine repaired condition their history is tainted by the Cat D and will never be worth more than 60% of their pre-accident condition.
In all honesty the fact this car is Cat D will not put canny people off as the reduction in value more than compensates. Ideally it would be a high quality repair but as it's likely to have been an external panel repair only even that could be put right easily enough.
I'd be more concerned if it is a LHD to RHD conversion and it's been done badly. And why someone felt the need to stage it as a barn find.
As a repaired Cat D in apparently 'barn find' neglected condition I think it would be a deal round the £5-£6k mark. But £8-£10k or whatever the guide price was - no.

Update on the auction - unsurprisingly the 'barn find' didn't sell. The far more attractive one went for £18,637 (Inc costs).
