The one aspect of driving my Z3 that I've never been happy with is the steering. Its always felt like hard work and not smooth enough for really confident cornering. I've had an E90 and a F30 previously and these were very good in that respect so I thought the Z3 should be better. In the past, I'd topped up the fluid but that was about it. On the M52 engine, the reservoir is difficult to access low down beside the engine.

As I've been doing the M50 manifold change, this was the time for a bit of maintenance whilst the manifold, throttle body etc were removed. The reservoir (reputedly) has a filter at the bottom which can become obstructed over time and would affect the efficiency of the system. I bought a new Meyle reservoir and tried to replace it in-situ but the hoses are short and so it was difficult to fit and be confident that the hose clips were in the right place. The two hoses that connect to the reservoir are fairly cheap (the other two are unbelievably expensive) so I ordered those and fitted them outside of the car.

The reservoir was then easy to bolt back in place.

My cooling loop was looking very rusty and was only really held in place by one remaining rubber mount. I've had a replacement loop set aside for over three years now that I got from a breakers in Florida. Yes its used, but no rust and looks much as new. I got some new bushes as well from a local Mini spares place via ebay which look like NOS but are still an improvement.

With everything connected, it remained to fill with some nice Castrol Dextron III fluid.

Some small repairs to the under tray fixing points and the nice clean tray, sans skeletons, was refitted before the bumper being replaced.

Then, a quick run to the garden centre to collect compost and herbs to keep Carolyn happy. So was this enough to make a difference? Oh yes! The steering is now very smooth and precise and I'm looking forward to being allowed out for a long run. A very worthwhile bit of maintenance completed.

This is the inbuilt filter you speak of. I've just brought it up in another thread as I wondered how they get in there in the first place.
I've just noticed your reservoir lives in a different place to mine. My reservoir sits in front of the alternator not behind it and is much easier to retrieve.

I am doing this exact same job as soon as parts arrive, easier to fit the pipes to the reservoir outside the car and then attach pipes to the bottom connection points from underneath I gather from your experience Steve?

Ah yes, I could see the top of the filter just like that. Presumably the filter could be inserted before the two halves of the reservoir are fused together maybe. I've noticed that on the TU engines, the reservoir is higher up/more accessible.

Yes, certainly in my case where I was replacing the cooling loop as well. The front bumper is only held on by two T50 bolts and a few small screws so comes off easily for better access. The connection to the pump was fairly easy to get to from underneath.

Food for thought that Steve I haven't ever given the PS a second thought for maintenance.:thumbsup:

Sorry to revive this post ....but is Castrol Transmax Dex III the preferred PS fluid for our Zeds ? and do you know how much you need ?

As far as I know, any fluid that meets the Dex III spec. is going to do the job. Also, any brand of new fluid is going to be a big improvement over 20 year old stuff.

 Thanks Steve ...one for me to do over winter I think .. the PS reservoir is even more of a pain to get to on an M43 engine...needs the airbox out

Would be worth using some PS flush when you do it Ant.

Tony.

It’s worth checking the return pipe from the power steering rack to the cooling loop too. They’re often very corroded.
I know a good supplier of replacement parts ;)

It’s in for rear shocks and drop links at the weekend..I’ll get them to check once it’s up on the ramp

Gave this a go this afternoon. Used an oil extractor to pull the old fluid from the reservoir , added new Dex III, ran the engine to circulate and get rid of any air. Repeated three times until I was extracting clean fluid. Checked levels and all seems good 👍. Might do it once again after a bit of a run. Pipes and cooling loop were all in good condition, in fact the cooling loop looks like it was replaced at some point.

Useful write-up. I need to do mine at some point and as you say, easier to get to on M52TUB28. I notice on your M52 that the fixing points are there on the oil filter housing (where the PS reservoir sits on M52TU), would it not make sense to relocate to the higher point?

The reservoir on the S50 is buried down in the engine under the inlet manifold  its going to be fun!

Got to move it
