I have tried finding out which oil filter tool I'll need for my 97 Z3 1.9. Is it the 74mm tool?

Thanks :)

It doesn't say in the manual either. I'd love to get the right one, not in need of that many.

If you filter housing has a hexagonal raised centre simply measure it across the flats. If it's 36mm then you need a 36mm socket. It is as easy as that. Honestly.

Sadly Tony my Z3 doesn't have that nut on the top.
Ok. Then what you need is this. I have one and it is an excellent tool. Works on oil filter, fuel filters even large glass jar caps! Many other applications too.

Yes I have given them some thought. Only issue is that I would like to torque the housing to the specified torque, which I cannot do with that tool. Should hand tight do it?

Yes. You simply tighten the housing until it stops. You cannot over tighten it. The large "O" ring is sealed well before the face of the plastic cover contacts the face of the housing. You could loosen the housing by 1/4 turn and run the engine without it leaking.

No, it simply stops turning. Then you don't force it any more. Wish you were closer I'd show you.

I have one of the thin pressed steel removal tools, its a bit thin and slips off the flats, resorted to using a chain type removal tool I also have. Have orderd a new set which looks a lot thicker and deeper than the thin metal one I have. Will see if the new ones are better at next oil change. The single handle strap wrench posted earlier wouldn't work on my 1.9, no room to swing it once threaded on the filter lid.

I've got the 1.9 M44 and the housing on mine is a 76mm 14 flats -

This may fit yours but I'm not going to guarantee it as there will be variations.

If I'm not mistaken There is a 3/8" square hole in the centre where you can use a ratchet or breaker bar loosen the filter housing.
