Here's one to keep an eye out for. Having already snapped the plastic tubing from the expansion tank at the point it clips to the air box (common issue), I went to remove the pipework from either end. As I pulled the clip off the radiator end the nozzle on the radiator snapped. Okay, maybe I levered too much on the factory clamp. But when I examined the remnants it was clear the plastic was 'rotten' and the break area had disintegrated into many fragments. Besides I've removed this pipework many times with no issues on other cars.

Old, unloved, high mileage car? Nope =))

I'm looking into replacing the plastic section of that pipe run. These complete assemblies are about £45 now. They are a known trouble spot, I must have broken at least 3 over the years on various cars. I think the problem is BMW used a type of plastic that isn't entirely suitable for the job. It's called PA12 and is usually used for low pressure air and hydraulic systems at more modest temperatures. I've found a small roll of replacement of the correct type. And it's from a dental supplies company, ie intended for supplying water to the drill. I just don't think it's up to continued exposure to the temperatures found in an engine bay. Anyway, I don't understand enough about different types of plastic to find a higher grade so I'll put back what was there and know it will last another 20 years at least. Just have to work out how to put nice bends in it now. Why the nozzle on the radiator disintegrated is more of a mystery.

Btw didn't have a suitable spare radiator, so needed a new one. OEM is Valeo at c£280. Nissens is well regarded but typically not far off that price. Autodoc was £150 but would have taken 2 weeks from Germany. Then of all places Euro Car Parts came up trumps at £116 which seemed like a decent price. Picking up Tuesday with the old one with me to make sure it's the correct part.

Most folk use copper/nickel bundy tubing in lieu but please paint it matt black!
Is this a new rescue project? I've not been active on the forum for a good while.
No it’s the one nice ready to go Z3 I’ve ever bought. It’s a forum car previously owned by geophys. It’s not needed a thing until now.

I do like to keep things as stock as possible. Especially on a car this nice. So I’m replacing it with a nearly new part off another car. And that other car will get the repaired part.

I’ve only just come back on the forum after a break too.

Ah, I see where you're coming from now. Being geophys car then yes keep it totally stock as will keep it's value. Is your better half still cruising around in it? Does look nice.
Yea it’s ‘her’ car. I just pay for it…

Hi Rob and Adrian @mrscalex and @Synclare long time how are you both?

Tony.
A few things that have changed priorities a bit in the last 2 years, mainly always feeling burnt out from work and spending more time with my Mum since my Dad died. But here I am again. With a long list of Z3 projects to work on.

Many people's priorities had to change these last 2 years mate, just the way it has been. During 2020 we went to the Crem. more times than the local pub, I suspect many did the same.
Glad to hear you still have your Zeds to keep you out of mischief mate.;) Keep well.

Tony.

I had the same bit fall to pieces a while back, used some epoxy resin to hold a suitable bit of pipe in the hole and fitted a long piece of rubber hose so the airfilter is a bit easier to get to. A bodge, but it works. All that REME training paid off.
Ah yes. I remember a REME guy turning up at our M107 to fix the steering bar back on. I was looking forward to a fews days out till that t*at turned up with his araldite and got us back on the road before I'd made a brew.

A brew was usually all we charged to fix something. A slab if it involved a recovery. Two slabs for an off-road recovery .
