47.8 MPG from a 2.8!

I do a regular trip to wales, 183 miles, about 1h motorway and 2h A roads mostly. I'm slightly over the speed limit on the M4, and I try really hard to keep to the speed limit on the A roads (even in places you shouldn't ;-)) -- I also do like overtaking, I know all the places, and I have no problem lining up up to 7 cars (my personal record) to overtake in one go....
Anyway, I do ~32mpg with my 2.8 on that sort trip. Rev matching downshift, and a few heel-toe in some cornery places, and quite a few places where I'm just driving the wheel out of the car because you can't do 60 anyway.

That's 3h, and I always arrive with a huge grin on.

In comparison if I do it in a renault Scenic 1.9 diesel, I was doing about ~40mpg if I was driving like I had a lobotomy. In the X3 (diesel) I do about ~50mpg with the same sort of driving.

I think that's really excellent for a 2.8 engine; only problem is 1) the range; the diesel cars do 400-600 miles per tank (!) and 2) the fuel gauge of the Z3 isn't terribly helpful... it does 100%->50% OK, and it does 50%->RESERVE in what feels like 15 minutes.

You are not supposed to put a rope between you and the vehicle in front ;)
Paul I went to sleep after 10 miles and woke up as Im entered Wisbech just in time to see the trip mpg figures, then I got to work and went back to sleep again!!!
