I have bought a new fuel filter and just wanted to know if there's anything tricky involved in replacing it for a D.I Y.er.
Do you have to remove the fuel pump fuse, clamp the fuel line etc ?

This is the new one from Opie Oils.

Is there a regulator attached to it at one end,or is that just on the /// M ?.

Thanks in advance :).

Steve, if you clamp the short rubber connector on the rear end of the filter all you can lose is the fuel inside the lifter itself. But the new filter should come with a "cap" on either end mate so having loosened both the jubilee clips pull the connector off the front of the filter and fit one of the caps from the new filter. Swing the front end down and pull the connector off the rear and just put your finger over the end of the filter till you get it out from under the car.

Tony.

Cheers for that Tony, sounds fairly straight forward with how you describe it.
Using the cover cap how you said is an excellent tip as well .

May have time tomorrow to do it,I'll let you know how it go's.

Just checked the new Mahle oil filter,it doesn't have the two small rubber O rings, should I get some from a BMW dealer ?. It does come with a new large O ring and sump plug washer though.

The main, large "O" ring is the most important, I wouldn't worry too much about the other two. If I get a filter at work which contains these I always change them, sorry to say I can't say the same about the others here.
The fuel filter also has a mounting clamp which is located over the rubber sleeve around the filter, obviously you need to remove this to let the filter loose but it can be the last thing to re fit when you've fitted the filter.

What's made you decide to change the filter Steve?

I can't find when it was last changed,I've never replaced it either. So I thought while the spanners are out to do the oil change it would be a good idea to do this as well.
Its not gonna hurt for sure you never know it might be the original ! There will be some dirt in there no doudt but with the zed having a plastic tank its probably not too bad just mucky fuel.

Took mine off no pressure from the inlet or fuel leakage (from tank) but huge pressure from the outlet side (to engine) got covered I am assuming its high pressure that side to keep a head of fuel at the injectors?

When I changed mine I pulled the fuel pump fuse when engine running so reduced the pressure in the lines. The one on ours 3.0 has the pressure regulator on the filter.

When I drained it there was a fair bit of muck in it.

If you pull the fuse make sure you put it back first (obviously) and turn the ignition on fir couple of minutes for the pump to refill the filter before starting the engine.still ran a bit lumpy for few seconds til air out of system.

Mine was changed 18 months ago when I had every service item done. Like some have said it certainly won't do any harm.

By the very nature of it being a filter will mean that it will do its job and stop impurities from getting to the pointy end of things. Like any filter, there will be a build-up of crud over time so will need changing and can only improve how the car runs no matter how minor. Well worth doing.

Edit: every 36,000 miles so if it's original, well overdue.
