According to the Z3 article by Mike Fishwick https://zroadster.org/articles/bmw-z3-history-by-mike-fishwick.18/ twin vanos was introduced Sept 1998 along with a revised intake manifold. I think face lift was Sept 1999 for model year 2000 vehicles. Certainly my 2.8 manufactured in Feb 1999 has the twin vanos engine.
Interesting project if you decide to go ahead with it @Sean d and I agree with others that buying a complete car and swapping all the parts you need would be the best option.

The very early 2.8 like mine is single vanos Sean which you can do the manifold swap to. I believe it can't be done to the twin vanos unit, I'm sure someone is going to jump on my head and tell me that's wrong!

It can be done on the 2.8 twin vanos, you use a manifold from a 330. And it's a lot easier and cheaper than doing it on a single vanos engine.

The dual vanos can be done as you can see with the manifold out,and all the sensors are taped up and written on the tape,with a permanent marker pen,so you know where they go,when you put the new manifold back in.

As you can see the m54 b30 manifold on the left has much larger ports than the m52 tu on the right,also the m54 b30 disa is huge compared to the m52 tu.

Is the m54 b30 a direct replacement or are there any parts required to make it fit the 2.8 double vanos. Is it just the inlet manifold is smaller than the block on the 2.8?

You require the Disa Valve too along with an adapter plate for the throttle body but it is a bolt on swap, it has an internal greater air displacment giving the engine more power in the mid to high end range.

Along with the manifold and DISA you need an adaptor plate for the throttle body from bimmertune.com.

Jimmy, Do you have a picture of the other side of the M54 b30 inlet. I got one last week and would like to check the details. Mine came with fuel rail and injectors, are they relevant?

Hi Michael I don't have a picture off the underside off the manifold,but my part numbers are
Manifold 7523291
Disa 7502275
Those numbers may or may not match your manifold,as there were lots off diffrent part numbers for the m54 engine,but there pretty much all the same,,good luck with your conversion.

It most certainly is pal, didn't realise I needed a gear box as well and then there is the diff, its just not a viable option
